Course Expectations
Courses are delivered through Imagine Learning unless otherwise specified. Grades 6-8 Health and PE and Grade 10 PE/Driver’s Education are delivered through FCPS Canvas.
Students are expected to stay ON PACE. If a student falls more than 10% behind pace, this indicates they are not participating enough to be successful. If a student needs academic support, they should reach out and book an appointment with their teacher.
Students are expected to work actively in their courses 60-90 minutes per day/per course which would show 300-450 active minutes per course/per week.
Students are expected to communicate with their virtual teachers both by responding to messages they receive from their teachers and sending messages to teachers when they have questions or need academic support.
Students are expected to complete 100% of the course and for secondary students, this includes an exam. This expectation must be met in order to remain eligible for participating in the Virtual Academy. A minimum of 80% coursework completion and a passing grade is required for course credit.
On Demand Tutoring: Expert tutors are available to provide real-time, individualized support online for grades K-12. Students can reach out to tutors directly from their lessons via chat and audio call to get help with concepts in: K-12 English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies and grades 6-12 French and Spanish.
Grading & Attendance
Grades, course pacing, and attendance are monitored in the Imagine Learning Portal. Students, parents, and the Virtual Academy Administrator are able to view this data.
Grading
Student grades and feedback on assignments are available for each course in the learning management system.
Imagine Learning Courses weight assignments accordingly:
Quiz 20%; Test 30%; Exam 15%; Essay 20%; Assignment 10%; Project 5%
Students are able to monitor their “overall grade” and “actual grade” in the Imagine Learning Management system. The actual grade is the grade that is reported by Franklin County Public Schools. Grades are reported according to the FCPS grading scale and timeline including progress reports, quarterly report cards, and final grade reports.
Definitions for Imagine Learning Grades (overall and actual) can be found in the Virtual Academy Handbook. “Actual” is the grade reported by FCPS.
Attendance
Attendance is first monitored by whether students are staying “On Pace” in ALL courses. Students have the flexibility to work ahead and make up work. However, the expectation is that students complete assignments on time and participate daily. In addition, elementary students are required to participate in synchronous sessions (daily for Reading).
Falling behind course pacing triggers notifications and concerns about attendance.
10% Behind: Families are notified and if pacing does not improve, attendance meetings will follow.
The Code of Virginia’s policy on educational attendance (§22.1-254) applies for online learning and compulsory school attendance is required by law. Virtual Academy, attendance means:
Completing all online assignments for each course within the due dates
Participating in required synchronous learning opportunities made available by your instruction provider
Submitting assignments appropriately through the Learning Management System within the due dates in order to stay caught up with course pacing expectations.
Reaching out to teachers as necessary regarding questions or concerns with class expectations
Maintaining grade expectations
Course Pacing: The Imagine Learning system reports (daily) whether students are:
Behind pace
On pace
Ahead of pace
If students are One Pace, each day when they login to their Imagine Learning Dashboard it will show they are slightly behind pace until they complete their daily work. Then, the system will report an On Pace status. Course pacing is the main indicator of attendance in the Virtual Academy.
Technology & Online Learning
Technical Requirements
Reliable daily internet access is required.
FCPS provides Chromebooks for students (Acceptable Use Policy applies). However, students can do their coursework on a personal device if preferred.
Students must log in to Imagine Learning daily and utilize the Course Report for tracking progress.
