The Silent e (CVCe) pattern refers to when a word or syllable contains a consonant, vowel, consonant, and then e. The e is "silent" because it is not pronounced. Instead, its job is to make the vowel sound long. For example, the CVC word can (short vowel) becomes cane (long vowel) when silent e is added. Silent e is sometimes called Magic e or Sneaky e.
