An r-controlled vowel is when a vowel is followed by the letter r in a word. The vowel has neither a short nor a long sound. The ar pattern (as in car) and or pattern (as in for) make distinct sounds. The er, ir, and ur patterns (as in her, bird, and turn) all make the same sound. Words with r-controlled vowels are sometimes called Bossy r words.
