Core Instruction
In the classroom, all students receive high-quality math and ELA instruction aligned to grade-level standards.
Flexible Small-Group Intervention
Students who need additional support beyond core instruction receive small-group interventions in math or ELA. These sessions focus on strengthening specific skills, filling gaps, and building confidence through guided practice. During Patriot Period, classroom teachers meet with students in flexible groups to provide scaffolded instruction and reteaching based on assessment data.
Targeted Small-Group and Individualized Intervention
Tier 3 intervention is highly targeted and goal-based, designed to address priority skills identified through assessment data. Each student works toward individualized learning goals in math and ELA that are measurable and monitored regularly. During Patriot Period, classroom teachers provide one-on-one or very small-group instruction, track progress toward goals, and adjust strategies as needed to ensure growth and success.
In a middle school setting, Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention services are essential components of the New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS), designed to ensure that all students receive the targeted instruction they need to succeed in both ELA and Math.
Tier 2 interventions provide small-group, evidence-based instruction for students who are not making adequate progress in the general classroom, allowing educators to address specific gaps in foundational skills such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, number sense, and problem-solving.
Tier 3 interventions offer more intensive, individualized support for students with significant skill gaps. During the new Patriot Period, students will have dedicated time to receive fluid, targeted intervention in ELA and/or Math, allowing educators to address individual learning needs and provide timely support based on current data and progress monitoring.
In addition to the variety of enrichment courses offered during the Patriot Period, students have the optional opportunity to supplement their learning in a variety of ways.
In addition to content area curricular extensions, FAMS Cycle classes, participation in Patriot Period "Micro-Courses," students are also encouraged to visit Ms. Marte's "Enrichment for All" Virtual Classroom. Here, students will find numerous activities and opportunities for personalized enrichment.
All supplemental Tier II ELA G&T services will occur during Patriot Period. Students identified for this service will work with the G&T Specialist during this time.
Tier III supplemental G&T instruction occurs during the regular school day. Students identified to receive this service will work with the G&T Specialist approximately one period per week. Classes are scheduled on a rotating basis to minimize classroom disruptions.
Franklin Lakes Public Schools believes that all students benefit from higher-level thinking and inquiry. The district’s Multi-Tiered System of Support encompasses in-class differentiation, push-in enrichment, and pull-out services. This continuum of services provides opportunities to meet the needs of all students while maintaining a keen focus on those identified as possessing exceptional academic talents. These students are provided the guidance, time, and resources to realize their academic potential.
