Overview
Advanced Study Skills is designed to help 7th grade students become more independent, organized, and confident learners by building strong study habits and mastering digital tools. Through hands-on activities, interactive assignments, and real-life scenarios, students will learn how to manage their time, set SMART goals, take better notes, prepare for tests, and stay focused. They’ll also explore how to use digital tools like Google Drive, Google Slides, Canva, Quizlet, and more to help them study, stay organized, and create powerful presentations.

Exposing students to a wide range of enrichment and exploratory opportunities. These experiences build toward a student-led, inquiry-based project in the final marking period, where students apply and showcase the skills and knowledge they’ve developed.
Students will explore mindfulness, self awareness, and personal growth through breathing, journaling, music and movement. Students will learn to manage stress, boost focus and build confidence while expressing themselves.
Biomechanics, Bones, Muscles, and Movement is a hands-on exploration of how the human body works like a finely tuned machine. Students will investigate the skeletal system as the framework that gives us structure, the muscular system as the engine that powers every motion, and the principles of biomechanics that explain how forces, levers, and balance allow us to move efficiently. In addition, students will examine how nutrition and bone health play a vital role in building strength, fueling muscles, and maintaining long-term wellness. Through interactive labs, models, and real-world applications—from sports performance to everyday activities—students will discover how bones and muscles work together to create movement, strength, and agility, while also learning what happens when injuries, imbalances, or unhealthy habits occur.
This Patriot Period is designed for 7th Grade and will focus on building confidence and skill in public speaking through engaging and supportive lessons. The class will focus on helping students learn how to organize their ideas, speak clearly, and use body language to communicate effectively. Activities include presenting short speeches, group discussion/debate, storytelling exercises, and presenting on topics of personal interest/current events. Students will also practice giving and receiving constructive feedback to strengthen both their speaking and listening skills. By the end of the course, students will feel more comfortable speaking in front of an audience and be prepared to use their voice in a variety of settings.
In this Patriot Period, students will identify what, and who, inspires and motivates them. They will begin by diving into what these two words really mean, not only to themselves, but to influential individuals across the world. Through this exploration, students will reflect on their past experiences to find instances of inspiration and motivation in their lives. The course will culminate in selecting an individual who inspires and motivates them. This can be someone in their personal life, a historical figure, an athlete, an artist, or anyone else! They will put together a comprehensive project showing the findings of their research on inspiration and motivation, how the person they identified fits the bill, and how they hope to embody those qualities for others.
This introductory economics course introduces students to key concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, supply and demand, and types of economies through interactive activities, research, and simulations. Students will explore how scarcity drives prices, practice analyzing supply and demand with games and graphs, and compare how different countries manage their factors of production. They will also research companies to understand specialization, examine monopolies in American history, and participate in a stock market simulation modeled after Shark Tank to learn about risk and reward. The course concludes with students researching a current event of their choice, analyzing its economic impact, and presenting their findings to the class.
This Patriot Period is designed to help 7th graders understand what it's like to be a reporter. They will be introduced to the foundations of reporting and news writing. They will learn how to identify credible information, gather facts through research and interviews, and end the course with writing a clear and interesting article. As a class, we will also talk about why honesty, fairness, and accuracy are important when sharing news. Students might get to try out different kinds of writing, like news stories, feature articles, and opinion pieces. Through fun projects, such as creating a class newspaper (or possibly contributing to the FAMS Newsletter/FAMS Patriot Social Media!) or online posts, students get a chance to share their work with others and see what it’s like to be part of the world of journalism.
This class introduces students to the world of data and how it can be used to answer questions and solve problems. Students will learn to organize information, calculate basic statistics, and represent data visually using graphs and charts. The course blends hands-on practice with technology, giving students experience with both paper-based graphing and Google Sheets. Along the way, students will explore real-world data from surveys, experiments, and everyday life. By the end of the course, students will complete a project where they collect and analyze their own data, then present their findings to the class.
An inquiry-based project is a student-driven learning experience where curiosity guides the process. Instead of being given all the answers, students identify a question or topic of interest, research it deeply, and design a final product that demonstrates their understanding. This process helps students strengthen essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, organization, time management, and effective communication. Along the way, they also practice independence and collaboration, learning how to take ownership of their work while seeking feedback and support. The goal is for students to connect their academic learning with authentic, real-world applications in ways that feel meaningful and personal.
Seventh graders will shift their attention outward to the Franklin Lakes community, researching local issues, opportunities, or initiatives and applying study strategies and time management skills to create projects that connect them with their town.
