In our community, we have children of all ages who need various things that some may take for granted. One of those things is new shoes. We have students who come to school with shoes that have no soles, that are too small, too big, that smell or they simply come barefoot. We have been able to give over a thousand pairs of shoes to children in our community. This will be our fourth year of the program, and are excited to start back up and provide local children with new shoes. The goal for this program for this year is to provide at least 500 pairs of shoes to our children. Turning Bare Feet into Learning Feet is a program I started six years ago and I am very passionate about it. The goal of the program is to not only provide students with a new pair of shoes for the school year but to also provide the experience of being able to pick out their shoes, their style, favorite color, etc. I still remember going to the shoe store and the smell of all the shoes and picking out that one pair of shoes that was going to start my school year off in an amazing way! A new pair of shoes can change a student's attitude, and mindset, boost their self-confidence or they could simply take some stress off the parents.
Shoes are a basic need that must be met. Students can’t focus on what their teacher is teaching and be engaged if they are worried about not having shoes that fit, shoes that are falling apart or shoes that make the classroom smell. A great children's book to read about how important shoes are to kids is Those Shoes by: Maribeth Boelts.
