What is Social Justice Week (SJW)?
A six-year tradition, Social Justice Week (SJW) at Farmington High School, is a student-led initiative that promotes inclusivity, equity and social justice through student voice and empowerment. A cornerstone of the program is civil discourse that occurs between students as they learn about one another. It takes tremendous courage and a significant amount of work for our students to prepare these presentations. When we engage in thoughtful discussions about challenging topics in a safe and inclusive environment, we gain insights and we deepen our empathy for one another’s perspectives and experiences.
Are students required to attend Social Justice Week Presentations?
It is important to note that attendance at our SJW sessions is optional for all FHS students.
The students have the option to attend SJW presentations. Each presentation is approximately 30 minutes with an additional 10 minutes allotted for dialogue, questions and answers. All classes meet throughout the week, with the potential for 40 minutes of the 84 minute class period being utilized to attend a presentation. Any student who opts not to attend a SJW presentation can let their classroom teacher know and will be provided an alternate option.

They receive training on presentation skills, research, rhetoric, and community building. Presentations are created by students and are for the student community. All students in the school are invited to attend meetings and plan a presentation. This information was disseminated via the 9:05 News in the fall of 2021.
Are the presentations available after SJW?
The presentations are for the students, by the students. All presentations are held in the FHS library and delivered in person during SJW.
Do students need permission to attend a Social Justice Week presentation?
Students should consult with their teacher before electing to miss part of a class to attend a presentation. Any student who does not want to attend a session has the choice to opt out.
