What device is being used in the 1:1 program?

The district has purchased the Acer C731 Touchscreen Chromebook device (17/18), Acer C771 Touchscreen Chromebook device (18/19) and the Acer C732 Touchscreen Chromebook device (19/20).

Will the district supply my child with a protective case for the Chromebook?

Yes. The district will provide protective cases for all students. The Chromebook is an "always-on" case meaning the Chromebook is to remain in the case at all times. Each Chromebook case is labeled with the student's name and homeroom for easy identification.

Does my child need to bring their Chromebook charger to school with them?

No. It is the child's responsibility to have their Chromebook fully charged for the school day. A sufficiently charged Chromebook with have enough battery life to last throughout the day without needing a another charge.

What if the battery dies during school hours?

Students are expected to have their Chromebooks fully charged before school each day. When fully charged, the battery will last throughout the entire day. The expected battery life on the Chromebooks is 9+ hours during normal use. Also, students will not be using their devices in every class every day, or for the entire period in classes where they are asked to do so. For this reason, the number of hours a student has their device turned on will be less than the number of hours they are in school on a given day.

What about theft, accidental damage, and accidental loss?

All students are provided with lockers to prevent theft. Students should not give their locker combinations out or leave their devices unattended. Devices should not be left in lockers overnight or on weekends. Parents who do not enroll in the optional Protection Plan will be financially responsible for all damage/loss of the device.

What happens if my child's device breaks or does not function correctly?

We have a number of loaner Chromebooks that can be provided to your child until his/her Chromebook is fixed/repaired. Students should report all Chromebook/technical problems to their teacher/Technical Support.

How do I learn how to use the device?

Check out the Parent Resources page to access resources and links to help you learn how to get started with your device. On this page you can find links to Google’s Chromebook Support web pages as well as information on connecting to your home network and how to print from a Chromebook.

Is my child allowed to install apps?

No. The apps on the Chromebooks and teacher driven to support the educational goals of their class.

Will there be internet filters on my child's Chromebook, specifically when at home?

Yes. The internet filtering on the Chromebook will be the same at versus in school. Internet filters are designed to block inappropriate content. However, not all filters are perfect. We still encourage parents to work with their children to monitor their activities on the internet and access to inappropriate content. Additionally, if you want additional security on your home network, there are 3rd party programs and services that allow you to filter your internet at home. OpenDNS, is one example of content filtering that can be installed on your home network. Parents are also recommended to work with their internet service provider on setting up filtering at home.

Will staff have access to the webcam on the device?

No. Staff will not have access to remote control of the device.

How can I access my child's account?

All K-8 grade Florham Park students have a Google Apps account that is accessed by using their assigned username and password. We encourage all parents to know their child's account login information, so please obtain and record this information from your child.

Please note that you do not need your child's Chromebook to access their Google account. You can simply open a web browser on any device with internet access to access your child's email, calendars, and files through Gmail (Google)
