Newsletter 9th February 2024
January has definitely not been a 'blue' month at FPJS with exciting events including TT Rockstars day, Viking day, Greek day, Egyptian day and Safer Internet day all in the space of a week! What a fabulous end to this term! Thank you to all the staff that have planned these curricular events and ensured that the children had such wonderful experiences linked to their learning.
As you may be aware, we are sad to say that Mrs Winter, one of our PE coaches and a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in year 6, has left FPJS to start a new job elsewhere. Mrs Winter has been a fabulous member of this team; from supporting in class, to covering lessons, to her role as PE coach and for all the support with extra curricular sports. We made sure that we thanked her for all that she has done and wished her well in the next step of her career.
From after half term, PE lessons will change a little. To fill the gap left by Mrs Winter and to keep PE being such an important subject to inspire and engage the children in, the lessons previously taught by Mrs Winter will now be taught by some of the teachers alongside Miss Gill still teaching her lessons. This will help build the PE team, ensure the continuation of high-quality lessons and also ensure that the children have a familiar person delivering their lessons. Very exciting times for PE at FPJS!
Department For Education Attendance Campaign
The Department For Education has launched a toolkit to help schools and families improve the attendance of our children. The attendance tag line is
“From the first day of term to the last, the small moments in a school day make a real difference to your child. #AttendanceCounts”
Alongside this, the Department For Education have also asked us to signpost families to the following document from the NHS:
https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/
We all know how important it is to have the children in school as often as possible and there is a clear link between attendance and attainment. The Department For Education have released these headline figures:
• In 2018/19, just 40% of persistently absent (PA) children in KS2 achieved expected KS2 standards, compared with 84% of pupils who were regular attenders.
But attendance is important for more than just attainment:
• Regular school attendance can facilitate positive peer relationships, which is a protective factor for mental health and wellbeing.
As a Federation, we want all our children to be in school so that they can be part of the wonderful opportunities that we provide. We do understand that children can get ill and that there are other times when children cannot be in school. To support children attending school, we will continue to alert families if their child's attendance is a concern and we will work with families to help their child to attend school. Being in school is more than about just academic progress; it is also the social interactions, the wow moments that create memories and the feeling of belonging in a large group of peers. Thank you for supporting your child attending school.
It leaves me to wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable half term.

What a brilliant day we had celebrating TTRS! The children and staff all came into school wearing their best rock and roll outfits. Throughout the day there were live battles between different year groups, maths themed activities and a jam packed assembly! In the assembly, there was a surprise performance from the FPJS staff who performed 'Livin' on a prayer' where all of the music was created by the staff themselves. There was also a live battle between the staff and students where the students beat the staff fair and square!
There is still a donation page for this spectacular day on Scopay - all donations are hugely appreciated as it all goes towards enhancing maths at FPJS.
Miss Morales
This Friday, we highlighted "Safer Internet Day" to our children. As part of our computing curriculum, children take part in digital literacy (online safety) lessons every term as we are aware of how important this aspect has become in children's lives. This years theme is ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’. The children have had assemblies and class workshops led by Paul Hay where they discussed private information and top tips for keeping safe when using online platforms.
Our four top tips are:
1) People online might not be who they say they are.
2) Be nice to people online.
3) Do not share your private information publicly online.
4) If you are worried - tell a trusted adult.
Throughout our PSHE and digital literacy topics we encourage children to talk openly to each other about how they stay safe online. This is an important aspect that parents should also be involved in and we would encourage all parents to speak to their children about how they are staying safe online and what information they are sharing online.
The following link: https://saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/safer-internet-day-2024/parents-and-carers has an excellent guide and top tips for parents and carers to use when speaking to their children about staying safe online. More information can also be found on our website

Year 4 had a fantastic morning when Al Sylvester came in to deliver a workshop on his experience of climbing Everest and his work supporting mountain rescue. He showed pictures and incredible stories of his experience. The children then had fun trying on and looking at the equipment that is needed to be successful and safe- as you can see from Seren and Ivan fashioning it in the picture above (both heavy and hot!). A fantastic morning and I believe we might have some aspiring mountaineers in our midst.
Year 5 had an enjoyable time in the hall performing their poems.
They all wrote a poem based on Adisa's "Barbershop Blues" where he writes about having his hair cut in the most dramatic of ways. He references the barber "preparing for a deathblow" and compares the barbershop to an abattoir. The children based their poems on something they hate doing - cleaning bedrooms, completing homework and bath time were among the top themes. Well done to all the performers, we loved hearing you read out your poems with tone, expression and rhythm.
On Thursday 8th February, Year 3 were lucky enough to have an Egyptian themed day. The children took part in many activities including hieroglyphic writing, arts and crafts and Egyptian dancing. The children and staff dressed up and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We learned about Egyptian Gods and created our own travel brochures for the British Museum. What a perfect way to end a topic. Well done Year 3!
On Tuesday 6th February, Year 4 had a fantastic day finishing their History topic on the Vikings- taking part in a Viking day! The children took part in a range of art and crafts activities including: making Viking longboats, shields and pendants. We were also really impressed with the costume effort put in. What a brilliant day!
On Wednesday 7th February, Year 5 had a great day doing all things Greek!
The children took part in Olympic games which took place in the hall. Just one of the many legacies of the Greek civilisation. They investigated Greek artefacts and looked in detail at coins, pottery, plates and masks.
The most enjoyable part of day, as I'm sure the children have told you, was the Greek food they tasted. This included feta and goats cheese with honey, figs, stuffed vine leaves, olives, pitta with taramasalata, tzatziki and hummus. Such a fun day!
Sewing Club:
A picture showing some of our talented sewing club participants and the lovely piece that they have just finished. They really do make lovely projects!
Well done to all our children who use TT rock stars regularly to practise times tables! In this edition we have an updated top ten and the top ten children who have made the most progress this term.
Well done to our top ten spelling pupils this week!
Congratulations to the top 10 in each year group who have scored the most points on Bedrock!
What a great start to the term!
This term the children have been developing their tag rugby skills. They have practised their passing, working in teams, their defending and attacking skills and practised their dodging and tagging skills.
In dance this term, they have been creating different types of routines depending on what topic they have been learning. Years 3 and 6 have been doing some Egyptian dancing. Their routines have been amazing. They have been learning about the techniques of mirroring, cannon, formations, travelling and counts of 8 and have managed to put them all into their routines!
Miss Gill
On Wednesday the 7th February, our netball team went to an away game against Oldfield Primary School. The match was a very competitive game with both teams playing so well! Our player of the match went to Megan, which was well deserved! The final score was 8-4 to Oldfield.
Miss Gill
Eagle class (year 5) represented Furze Platt Junior School at the Junior Dance Festival at Braywick Leisure Centre on Thursday 8th February. They performed a Jive style dance to the Wham! song ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’. They all performed brilliantly and their smiles were almost as bright as their neon coloured accessories!
It is a 10 from us in Eagle Class!
Mrs Slyfield
Eagle class had been practising this dance for 4 weeks and, at the dance Festival with a live crowd, they absolutely smashed it! I couldn't be more proud of them, their creative ideas towards their dance, their big smiles and how professional they looked.
Miss Gill
What a fantastic term we have had in Year 3! We started our topic on Ancient Egyptians with an exciting and educational trip to the British Museum and have ended it with an Egyptian day!
In maths the children have been working on measuring in mm, cm and metres as well as focusing on perimeter. The children have been converting lengths and then using this knowledge to add and subtract.
In English we have been creating our own story settings. The children have looked at adverbs, paragraphs and the 5 senses which have fed into these magnificent story starters.
In science we have looked at seed dispersal in plants and the children have enjoyed looking at how water is transported through plants.
As part of PSHE we have been focusing on safety and how to treat people for first aid as well as how to deal with bites and stings and water safety.
In DT we have been designing and making our own Egyptian collars which links to our history topic. The children have used cutting and sewing skills to help create these.
The children also thoroughly enjoyed rocking out for TT Rock Stars day and took part in battles as well as learning about the history of Rock and Roll!
We have truly enjoyed this term and all of the learning that has taken place. Have a wonderful half term break.
Mrs Barry- Y3 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks!:

What would you see, smell, touch, taste or hear at a theme park?
Dog Man - Dav Pilkey
I Am The Seed That Grew The Tree - Fiona Waters
The Story of Tutankhamun - Patricia Cleveland-Peck
We seem to have whizzed through yet another half term, finishing on a high with our Viking and internet safety day. The children have experienced a range of exciting activities and days this term all linked to their topical learning.
In English, the children have been busy publishing their Viking balanced arguments ready to set sail and display on the Viking long boats they created on Viking day. The children spent time writing for and against points with backed up evidence as to whether or not the Vikings really were savage warriors or, if they were merely regular folk like you or I.
In book talk, the children finished off the term by writing a book review linked to the Everest book we have been reading. The children thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved learning about the different routes now available to climb Everest, alongside the trials and tremors faced when Norgay and Hillary climbed for the first time. With topics like this it makes it an enjoyable experience when trying to practice inference and retrieval skills!
Finally, in computing, the children have been practicing repeated algorithms and have been successful in creating accurate codes. We discussed the importance of accuracy when creating algorithms, as the computer will follow the EXACT command you input. From the first lesson the children played around on turtle academy playground creating basic shapes, this then progressed into them creating larger shapes with patterns. Followed by a finishing lesson where the children put all of this together to create a picture with a repeated pattern.
We hope the children have a lovely half term break and feel refreshed ready to start the new term in a weeks time. Caio for now.
Miss Keating-Bell Y4 Team Leader

Illumanatomy - Kate Davies
Tom Gates -Liz Pichon
Well done, Year 5! We made it to half term. I can't believe how much learning has taken place over the last six weeks. You have all been brilliant.
In maths, we have come to the end of fractions (I can hear the children breathing a sigh of relief!) and we will be continuing to link the knowledge we have learned with decimals and percentages after half term.
In writing, we have finished our poetry and filling our last few lessons with helpful grammar revision ready for writing our diary entries after half term.
In art, we have finished our cityscapes. The children looked at the work of two artists - Stephen Wiltshire and Vincent Van Gogh - where they amalgamated the two styles onto their own piece. We were so proud of the final pieces we have displayed them outside our classrooms.
On Wednesday, the children enjoyed their Greek day, which brought a close to our Ancient Greek history, where they took part in some Olympic style games, looked at artefacts and tasted Greek foods. As you can imagine, the olives were not a favourite!
We finished the term learning about how to stay safe online with a visitor - Paul Hay who did a workshop with children on internet safety.
Have a wonderful half term and we look forward to seeing you back in school for term 4!
Mrs Dean, Y5 Team Leader

The Day My Family Disappeared - Jo Simmons
Being Me ; Poems About Thoughts, Worries and Feelings - Liz Brownlee, Matt Goodfellow and Laura Mucha.
We are half way there! February half term officially marks half way through the academic year. Since Christmas, we have covered a lot in Year 6 and we are incredibly proud of how hard they have worked.
In maths, we have been looking at raito and proportion. We have also been refining our arithmetic skills and revisiting areas of fractions and percentages. After half term, we will be moving onto algebra, perimeter and area.
In English, the children have thoroughly enjoyed their unit of encyclopaedia's. They have enjoyed choosing their own topic and organising their information accordingly. We have been using all of our knowledge of various sentence types to put together this piece of informative writing.
In science, we have finished our unit on Evolution where the children have learnt about natural selection and the work of Charles Darwin. In History, we have been exploring the big question of ' Which ancient civilisation was the most advanced?'. They have formed their own answer based on research and evidence.
In art, we have been looking at proportion of sculputers inspired by the artists Giacometti and Degas. We have been looking at how to draw the human form to scale and we have created sculptures influenced by one of these artists out of wire and modrock.
