A magical start to Walk to School Week!
There has certainly been a lot going on here at FPIS over the past few weeks, as the children continue to immerse themselves in their learning with continued passion and enthusiasm. Please take a look below for all our latest news from each Year Group - and more besides...
We have had a particular focus on road safety recently through our Walk to School Week assemblies and the very entertaining and informative Road Safety Magic show, which the children thoroughly enjoyed last Friday. Our thanks to the FPSA for funding this most magical opportunity. Across the week, our children have been sharing how they have been getting to and from school each day (walking, scooting, biking and even skateboarding!) They have also been excited to talk about some of the fun things they have been doing along the way. We have been busy learning Makaton signs to help us remember the key words in the Green Cross Code (below) as well - Think; Stop; Look and Listen; Wait and Walk.
Thank you for the many delicious donataions of cakes and cookies for our Trunks across the Thames (TatT) Cake Sale this week. Our School Council team did an excellent job of organising and helping out on the stall - raising an impressive £207.70 in total! This means our FPIS Trunks Across the Thames fundraising page total now stands at £986 which is 75% towards our target of £1300. Thank you so much for your support.
After the holidays, our Eco Team will be helping out with the TatT fundraising efforts with their exciting Sunflower Growing Competition. Find out more below!
With the wonderfully warm and sunny weather forecast for the bank holiday and half term break, I hope you have an enjoyable time (and stay sun-safe!) I look forward to welcoming our children and families back to school on Monday 1st June.
With very best wishes
Jane Indge
Head of School

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.
Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:45am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.
Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week. SAM will be spending next week in Caterpillar Class who had a perfect attendance figure of 100%! Well done!
Our latest school attendance figures for each class are shown in the table. Our school attendance target is: 97%

Poetry Parade
The theme for World Poetry Day this year is: Poetry: A Bridge for Peace and Inclusion and as a whole school we decided to focus on the word ‘inclusion’. Each class over the last week have been busy becoming poets and choosing a theme for their very own class poem! Each class has written their own fabulous poem and thought of an activity which matches the theme of their poem. Some examples of the themes of the poems included; nature, Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night artwork, waves and kindness. On Thursday every class took part in a Poetry Parade! We visited each classroom, read each class poem and completed the activity. By the end of the parade, we had collectively created; a graffiti wall representing our school, our own representation of Van Gogh’s Starry Night artwork, a colony of bumblebees, a whole school caterpillar and watched a live webcam of an osprey nest including our own observational drawings. We also had some team games challenges and dances to complete in other classes too!
It was a great way of sharing the importance and fun of poetry whilst also taking part in some fun activities. It was also super exciting to do these activities in all nine of the different classrooms! Each class now has their own poetry book in their classroom with our very own poems in them! Look out for these poems on a Poetry Display in our Library.
Each year group enjoyed a wonderfully exciting show teaching us all about the importance of road safety whilst also enjoying a range of road safety themed magic tricks. The magic words we had to learn were: STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK. We learnt about the important things we need to remember when being near the road, crossing the road and what to remember when walking around with our grown-ups at night. A great time was had by all!
Early Years
This week in Bumblebee, Caterpillar and Dragonfly class the children have been busy continuing their learning on the traditional tale The Gingerbread Man. The children were excited to make and bake their own Gingerbread people. They carefully weighed out the ingredients and used their senses to explore different smells, textures and tastes. Once the Gingerbread people were cooked, the children loved decorating them and making each one unique with their chosen design.
The children very kindly made an extra Gingerbread man for Mrs Wytchard to enjoy on her lunch... however, there was great excitement around school when Mrs Wytchard’s gingerbread man went missing! The children followed clues that were left around the school and they helped create “Wanted” posters to try and find him! It was lovely to see how engaged the children were when creating their wanted posters. The children drew pictures of him and wrote words to describe what he looked like and how he smelt!
This week, the children have been learning about transport and discussing what a vehicle is. They thought carefully about their favourite vehicle and explained why they liked it. Some children challenged themselves to write a sentence about their favourite vehicle, extending their ideas by using the word “because”. The children have been working hard this week to plan their chosen vehicle. They carefully thought about the details their vehicle would need and discussed which materials they could use to create their model in 3D. We were very impressed with the care and time the children put into creating their super vehicles!
In maths, the children have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. The children had a go at exploring tangrams, creating pictures with shapes sponges and creating 3D models using reclaimed materials. The Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been talking about how shapes look, learning the names of different shapes, and describing their features. The children enjoyed identifying shapes in the classroom and discussing the differences between flat 2D shapes and solid 3D shapes.
On Monday 11th May our Early Years children went on a school trip to Windsor as part of their learning this term about 'Journeys'. To prepare for the journey our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies learnt about landmarks in our local area, map reading and different ways to travel. We started our journey at school and boarded a coach with maps of the local area. The coach then took us on a journey around Maidenhead and we spotted local landmarks before travelling on to Windsor. We walked across Alexander Park and boarded our boat. Captain Nathan took us on a trip down the Thames before returning to our starting point to eat our lunch. During the boat trip, the children had to see what they could spot along the river Thames and they used a tally chart to count how many they saw altogether! The children excitedly talked about the places that they recognised and everyone had a fantastic day with a particular highlight being their packed lunch! After our visit, the children enjoyed sharing their experiences by writing sentences about what they saw, liked and loved. They also created detailed drawings inspired by the trip.
Thank you to all the adults that helped make the day a success and our brilliant Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies who were all fantastic role models for our school, we are so proud of you all!
Our Early Years children took part in a painting workshop with Amanda from Norden Farm Arts Centre. The workshop called 'Our Town Map' helped us to launch our Summer Term project 'Journeys'. The children worked collectively using colour and shape to produce Bumblebee, Caterpillar and Dragonfly Towns. They were extremely proud of their creations and are looking forward to sharing them in our Early Years Exhibition next term.
Early Years Forest School
In Forest School, the children have been planting herbs and flowers to help encourage butterflies and bees into our outdoor areas. The children enjoyed learning about how plants support wildlife and discussed why bees and butterflies are important for nature.
Some children also had a go at creating wind streamers using sticks, ribbon and string. They practised tying the materials together with some support. Luckily, it has been a very windy week, so the children really enjoyed watching their streamers blowing in the wind!
When Stick's Become Stories
This week, the children took part in an exciting workshop led by the National Literacy Trust called 'When Sticks Become Stories.' The children began by exploring the outdoor environment to carefully choose their own special stick. Using their imaginations, they then became fully immersed in a whole-class storytelling experience where the sticks transformed into magical objects, characters and story props. The workshop encouraged creativity, communication and imaginative thinking and the children thoroughly enjoyed bringing stories to life together.
This term for our project 'We're Going on an Adventure!' we have looked at some explorers who have been on adventures across different continents. So far we have looked at Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Karen Darke. We have loved learning about their lives and the amazing things they have achieved - it has inspired us all!
We have loved guessing where different fruits are grown around the world and discovering the journeys they have made, learning about their food miles. We then thoroughly enjoyed making our own fruit sticks following an algorithm to ensure we placed the fruit in the correct order.
We have also been busy applying our Sticky Knowledge of primary and secondary colours to designing and painting our own flags.
We have continued to learn about the five groups of animals: mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles and thought about the special characteristics that enable them to be classified in one of the groups. We have also been thinking about the way that animals adapt to their environment, such as the symbiotic relationship between clown fish and sea anemones and how different types of frog are either brightly coloured to warn off predators or how they can camouflage into their surroundings.
We have also been enjoying learning about Judaism in RE and we have been learning about the importance of Shabbat. Miss Dexter came to tell us more about this and even bought in some Challah bread for us to try! We all thought it was delicious!
During our maths sessions we have started having ‘Fun with Fractions!’, learning all about halves and quarters of objects, shapes and quantities. We have proved that two equal parts make a whole (halves) and four equal parts make a whole (quarters) and shown our understanding in different ways.
In outdoor learning we have been planting some tomato plants! We loved using grow bags to plant them and are eager to see how they will continue to grow!
We have continued to enjoy exploring our five oceans and the different layers of the ocean. It has been a great opportunity us to further explore our artistic skills by representing different marine animals who call the ocean their home whilst also thinking carefully about the different colours we need to use to accurately represent the different colours you might find.
We have also been continuing to explore the impact of plastic pollution to marine wildlife and have been thinking carefully about small steps we can be taking to help our planet. This has been a great opportunity to drawn on prior learning about the 3R’s and how we can use the knowledge we have already learnt to help us. One of our lanyard challenges has been to design and create a poster to raise awareness of the impact of plastic pollution and the importance of looking after our world. We thought carefully about ensuring that the posters were eye catching and shared accurate information.
As part of our RE lessons we have continued to explore our big question: ‘Does going to the mosque give Muslims a greater sense of belonging?’ To help us answer this question Mrs Fazal led a year group assembly on Wudu and the importance of this before prayer.
We have also been busy being poets and have been using our poetic skills to write poetry using descriptive language to describe the sea and marine animals. It has been wonderful to use our English skills to create some unique and beautiful poetry!
To share some exciting news as we have been preparing for our trip to Mudeford which will be happening on Tuesday 2nd June! We have been thinking carefully about the importance of being safe by the sea, learning all about Beach Huts, coastal features and different things we may find at the beach. One of our lanyard challenges was to explore real life objects previously found on a beach combing session at Mudeford and using our ID spotter guides to help us identify the objects. This was great practice for us as we will be doing some beach combing as one of our many exciting activities during our trip. Please ensure that you have read the letter sent via the School App on the 13th of May.
A reminder letter for the trip will be sent out during half term when we have a clearer idea of what the weather will be like (famous last words!!) and a final confirmation of the items your child will need to bring with them so please do keep your eyes peeled.
Sunflower Growing Competition!
Our Eco-Representatives have been busy caring for and watering our newly germinating sunflower plants and the children have loved watching them grow. They have been amazed to see how quickly the plants are thriving and are taking great pride in helping to look after them.
A reminder that Eco will be selling sunflower plants for £2 after half term.
All proceeds will go directly to Trunks Across the Thames, helping to support the fantastic work of Thames Hospice.
School Council have been busy with their second cupcake sale of the year! We have been collecting cupcake donations and selling them this week to raise money for the Thames Hospice! We were delighted to see so many generous donations of yummy cakes and we had lots of fun selling them to everyone after school! A BIG thank you to everyone who bought or baked cakes for us - we really appreciate it! We managed to raise £207.70 from this cake sale!
We are aiming to raise £1,300 for Thames Hospice by the end of the year, so please give generously if you can using the link below:
In nurture, the children have been busy experimenting with water. We took a number of different items like sugar, salt, sand and oil, we have to predict when added to water would the item dissolve or not dissolve. We also used skittles and arranged them on plates, we added water to these and watched as the colours from the skittles made lovely patterns.
We have also enjoyed getting outside in the sun and have been busy planting courgettes and tomato plants in the front playground raised beds. Our strawberry plants from last year are looking amazing and we are hoping to soon have some to pick. We also did a scavenger hunt, looking round the school for things like insects, leaves and birds.
Finally we finished the term with some decorating treats, we covered rice crispie cakes with icing and sprinkles and decorated biscuits with icing, sprinkles and marshmallows.
Many congratulations to our yellow house team Monoceros. They were awarded the most house points overall - 746 in total!
A great team effort!
Every Friday, during our whole school Celebration Assembly, Head of School awards are given out to a child or children in each class. The certificates are presented by Mrs Indge to those children who have consistently demonstrated excellent behaviours for learning.
Miss Dexter pops on her Superhero cape each week during Celebration Assembly to present our SuperPoWeR awards. The awards are given to children who have been demonstrating excellent behaviour through our school values of Passion, Well being and Respect.
Every week, during our Head of School Assembly, a bingo ball is selected from our special red bag. The bingo balls are numbered 1 - 30. Each child in Year 1 and 2 with the corresponding register number to the ball chosen will have the opportunity to bring their Maths book and Project scrapbook to share with Miss Dexter, Miss Edmondson, Miss Aggarwal and Mrs Indge later that week. During the Book Bingo session, the children spend time looking through the books together with the adults, whilst discussing and explaining what they have been busy learning about.
Quiz Night
Mr T's Quiz Night was back last Friday evening at the Juniors. 27 teams packed into the hall to take part in the 10th anniversary quiz. There was lots of fancy dress on show from The Spice Girls, Where's Wally, Teletubbies, Rockstars, Butterflies and more. The prize to the best dressed team went to the Men In Black team with runners up the Mexicans. Best team name was 'We're going on a beer hunt'.
The winners of the quiz were 'The Tipsy Teletubbes' with 'Totally T-voted' in second and 'FPJS Punk Rockers' in third, the latter one of 3 separate teams of Juniors staff. The music round finished with Take That on the stage singing 'Back for good' and 'Could it be magic', incredible scenes! Thank you to everyone who came. The quiz night will return in October.
