Blossom Joins the Herd!
The Summer Term has begun with our Brilliant Beginnings to launch our third (and final!) projects for the year. Although it has only been a few weeks since we returned from the Spring break, there has been a lot going on here at FPIS as the children continue to immerse themselves in their learning with continued passion and enthusiasm.
We were all so excited to finally see the finished design for our FPIS baby elephant at the start of this term. Inspired by our class names, as you may recall, our elephant design was brought to life by the children working alongside local artist Emma Sweeting last term. With the help of our School Council representatives, we chose the name Blossom to reflect the theme of the natural world and symbolise the way our young children grow, develop, and flourish. Blossom has now gone off to join the rest of the Trunks Across the Thames herd - and we are eagerly awaiting news of where our FPIS baby elephant will be situated over the summer. Please take a look below for more about our Trunks Across The Thames fundraising efforts - as well as a photo of Blossom with our very proud School Councillors!
Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts in our recent uniform survey. We truly appreciate you taking the time to contribute. Now that the consultation has closed, our next step is to review the feedback alongside our Governors. We want to ensure we make the best choice for our children and families, so we will be taking the time to evaluate all perspectives thoroughly before any decisions are made.
We have had a particular focus upon learning about how to keep ourselves safe in the sun during our assemblies this week. The children have been using the 5 S's - Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide, Shade, to help them remember what they need to do when the Ultra Violet (UV) levels are moderate and high. We are monitoring the levels each day in class to make sure we are all protecting ourselves accordingly.
Parental support plays a vital role in our efforts to implement effective sun safe practice in school. Therefore, please remember to ensure that your child has a suitable sun hat and sunscreen, both of which are clearly labelled, in school every day. Sunglasses may also be bought to school - please label, if possible. Thank you in advance for your support.
Whilst at the moment the forecast for the bank holiday weekend is not looking particularly settled at the moment, I hope you have a lovely time - whatever the weather brings!
With very best wishes
Jane Indge
Head of School

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.
Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:45am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.
Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week. SAM will be spending next week in Silver Birch Class who had an almost perfect attendance figure of 99.3%! Well done!
Our latest school attendance figures for each class are shown in the table. Our school attendance target is: 97%

On Friday 17th April FPIS was filled with lots of different colours and costumes all with an elephant theme! Each year group 'herd' took part in a sponsored 'STOMP' around the FPJS track for our Trunks Across the Thames project raising funds for Thames Hospice. Together as a Federation we walked a combined distance of 430 miles (which is the length of the river Thames and back again!)
As you know, we are aiming to raise £1,300 by the end of the year in order to sponsor our baby elephant, Blossom, who will be part of the Trunks Across the Thames art trail during the summer months. So far we have raised £778 and are at 59% of our final target. Thank you for all for your generous sponsorships and donations so far. Look out for more elephanty events coming soon! :-)
All of the children (and grown ups too) enjoyed our sunny Brilliant Beginning, which was a journey to Oaken Grove park! We discussed how we were going to get there and talked about being safe on our journey. Mr Wallace ensured that we were extra safe when crossing the road by being our lollipop man and stopping oncoming cars. The children made full use of the park once we had arrived and it was wonderful to see so many of our children's grown-up's come along on our journey too - thank you for coming! The children thoroughly enjoyed their first school trip and are excited for the next one!
Early Years
Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been very busy since returning from their Easter holidays!
We launched our new project 'Journeys' and the children were excited to share, draw and write about a journey that they went on during the Easter break! Our Early Years explored a range of maps and discovered why they might be helpful. Following this, the children also walked around our school grounds using maps of the school to help navigate the way. Once the children had returned back to their classroom they 'had a go' at designing their own map and labelling the areas. They drew parts of the school that they had noticed such as the log park, pond, woodlands, the car park and more! We used directional language and our senses as we travelled around. Many of the children were inspired by the different map's and chose to create another one during busy learning.
The children have been busy growing sunflowers and a variety of herbs, including basil and chives. Through this hands-on experience they have been learning about what plants need to survive, such as sunlight, water, and good soil. We have also been discussing how to care for them properly, including regular watering and ensuring they have enough space to grow. The children have shown great enthusiasm and responsibility while looking after their plants and it has been wonderful to see their excitement as they observe the changes and growth over time.
In maths with have been using our subitising and composition knowledge to make '5 and a bit'. The children have been making links and using different representations to explore the composition of numbers to 10 and talking about number bonds to 10. During Marvellous Maths they have enjoyed exploring money through role play shops in their classrooms. We have also explored positional language, maps and following a route around the classroom.
This week we began retelling the Gingerbread Man traditional tale through actions and words. We linked the Gingerbread Man story to our project 'Journeys' and the children created their own story maps to help them retell the story in sequence. As well as this, the children have been using playdough scented with ginger and cinnamon. They explored the different smells and textures, sparking lots of curiosity and conversation. The children used the playdough to create their own gingerbread people, carefully shaping and moulding the dough. They showed great attention to detail as they added features such as buttons, eyes, and mouths, making each one unique. We are all looking forward to baking our own Gingerbread next week... lets hope ours don't run away!
Early Years Forest School
During our Forest School sessions, the children have been busy exploring their creativity by making wonderful "character sticks!" We began by talking together about how to use tools safely, learning the rules and practicing how to handle them with care and responsibility. The children then used peelers to carefully strip the bark from their sticks, developing their fine motor skills and confidence in handling tools. Once prepared, they thoughtfully designed and painted their own unique characters, showing great imagination and pride in their creations. These character sticks were then brought to life during small world play where the children created their own narratives.
To launch our new project 'We're Going on an Adventure!' Year 1 gathered in the hall to travel around the world and visit each of the seven continents. Each teacher taught us about a different continent and we learnt some fun facts from each place! We investigated some of the main physical features, weather and animals found there. As part of our Brilliant Beginning we were all invited to bring in an object, picture, flag, postcard or drawing of a country or place we have visited. We shared our experiences with the rest of the class and loved hearing about everyone's adventures! It was wonderful to see and hear the children speak so passionately about their chosen place. Thank you to everyone who spent time preparing the objects and posters and also for discussing your children’s ideas with them!
We have also been reading a variety of fictional adventure stories. Using these stories as inspiration, we used our imagination and created our own stories! We started by creating a story map and planning each part, then we had a go at writing it up as a short narrative.
During our maths sessions our drip feed has been to recognise the UK coins and notes. We have also been working on the beginnings of multiplication and division by counting in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s, grouping objects into equal groups and drawing arrays. These concepts fit in with the big idea of unitising: counting in steps of equal sizes and treating a group of, say, five objects as one unit of five.
In outdoor learning we have enjoyed some improved weather! We have been enjoying cloud watching, bug hunting, creating observational drawings of the pond and its surroundings, playing parachute games as well as quietly reading books listening to the bird song.
We have been thinking about how technology is integral to the supply of our food as it is grown and transported from all over the world. We have also been busy applying our Sticky Knowledge of primary and secondary colours and using this in our busy learning to create different flags from around the world!
We have started learning about five groups of animals: mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles. So far we have looked at mammals and reptiles and thought about the special characteristics that enable them to be classified in those groups.
We have had an exciting start to our project 'Wonderful Water!' which we launched with our Brilliant Beginning. We called this our 'Water Creative Day' and enjoyed two creative activities. We explored Hokusai and recreated our own representations of his artwork The Great Wave and also created our own class collages of the Pacific ocean, thinking about the different marine animals who use the Pacific ocean as their habitat.
Continuing with the artistic theme, we have been busy researching the five layers of the ocean and have created our own ocean themed artwork painting each layer of the ocean. We have thought carefully about the creatures that live in the ocean and represented them in our paintings.
We have also been busy learning about the five different oceans and the different layers of the ocean, creating our own information sheets with illustrations to show what we have found out. We have been using information books, iPads and globes to further our research skills.
Plastic Pollution has also been a theme we are beginning to investigate, thinking about the impact of this on our oceans, humans, and animals. We have been taking part in our own rescue missions using tweezers and a water tray in our classrooms!
Finally, as mathematicians we have been busy exploring fractions and learning that fractions can be fun! :-)
To celebrate 50 days until the commencement of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales, Key Stage 1 celebrated Schools Cricket Day on 23rd April 2026, bringing barrier-free cricket activities to everyone! We started the day with a Live Assembly where passionate cricketers shared why cricket was important to them and taught us more about how a game of cricket is played.
To continue the cricket themed celebrations we had cricket equipment set up at lunchtime and enjoyed participating in some cricket themed games!
Sunflower Growing Competition!
Our Eco-representatives have been busy getting their hands dirty to launch FPIS’s very first Sunflower Growing Competition!
To keep things eco-friendly, we have been recycling pre-used plant pots and old yoghurt pots to grow our sunflowers in. Once the seeds have started to germinate, the seedlings will be available for purchase. 100% of the proceeds will go directly towards our Trunks Across the Thames campaign raising funds for Thames Hospice. Keep your eyes peeled for details on when you can grab your plant!
Every child who buys a sunflower will be entered into our school-wide competition to see who can grow the tallest, brightest, and most spectacular bloom.
The World Record Title
The current Guinness World Record for the tallest sunflower stands at a staggering 10.90 metres, grown by Alex Babich in 2025—that’s taller than a three-storey house! Do you think you can beat it?
School Council have loved being so involved with our elephant for Trunks Across the Thames this term. One of our most exciting tasks was choosing a name for our beautifully finished elephant!
We had a grand reveal during assembly, and it was fantastic to see the final design come together after all the hard work from Emma Sweeting and our elephant workshops. Every class took part by voting for their favourite name, carefully thinking about how it linked to the elephant's design.
After collecting all the suggestions, we were delighted to announce the winning name during our Celebration Assembly this afternoon... Blossom!
Well done to Silver Birch Class for their brilliant suggestion. We are so excited to see Blossom featured on the art trail soon!
In nurture, the children have had a great start to the summer term, we have been experimenting with colour and water. Our first activity was colour mixing - we used red, yellow and blue food colouring in cups of water, draped kitchen roll from one cup to another and watch the coloured water soak into the kitchen roll changing into orange, green and purple. Next we did some watercolour mixing and painted pictures using the colours we made. Finally we experimented with different objects like chalk, wood, stone, pompoms and rubber to see if they would float or sink when added to water. The children had to make their predictions beforehand.
We have also been planting cress seeds in small pots with damp cotton wool and have been delighted with how quickly they have grown.
Lastly we managed to squeeze in one of our favourite activities, making sandwiches. We are so impressed at how well our children followed the step by step instructions, spreading the butter and filling very carefully. Of course, the best part is then we get to eat them!
During our sessions this term we have been focusing on 'looking after nature' - one of our Forest School responsibilities. We have been checking the woodland area for litter. We have also been taking care of the hedging we planted last year - which is growing fast!
This week, we had a go at Hapa Zome (leaf-dyeing) This is a Japanese-inspired craft that involves hammering leaves into paper to create a natural print .
