A super start to the Summer Term!

Our new projects for the Summer Term have begun with Brilliant Beginnings for all of our children to enjoy. Already we have had some very exciting and inspiring events in school to really help the children engage and immerse themselves in their learning. We cannot wait to see the wonderful work produced as a result!

The Summer Term is going to be another super-busy one, so please do keep checking our school calendar for dates of events coming up. Key events, such as Sports Day, performances and leavers celebrations for our Year 2 children have been added for some time, but there are always a few extra things that we seem to manage to squeeze in. We really don't want our children and families to miss out on anything, so please take a look below for information on how to subscribe to our school calendar - and get diary dates downloaded straight to your personal calendar on your device.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend!

With very best wishes

School Attendance

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.

Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:50am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.

Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week.

SAM will be spending next week in Holly Class as they had the best attendance overall with an impressive score of 99.3%! Well done!

Our latest school attendance figures for each class are shown in the table. Our school attendance target is: 97%

You can read our full Attendance Policy here.

Early Years

Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been super busy since returning from their Easter holidays! We launched our new project on Journeys and the children were excited to share all the journeys that they had been on during the Easter break! Our Early Years explored a range of maps and discovered why they might be helpful. Following this the children also walked around our school grounds using maps of the school to help them on their journey. Once the children had returned back to their classroom they 'had a go' at designing their own map. They drew parts of the school that they had noticed such as the log park, pond, woodlands and more! We used directional language and our senses as we travelled around. Many of the children were inspired by the different map's in our classroom and chose to create another one during busy learning.

Our Bumblebee's, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have been making good use of our planting area outdoors. The children have prepared the growing beds and planted a variety of vegetable seeds in pots. Our Early Years have been caring for them in Bumblebee classroom and when they are ready the children will re-plant the vegetables in our growing area where they can continue to grow until they are ready to eat!

In maths with have been using our subitising and composition knowledge to make '5 and a bit'. The children have been making links and using different representations to explore the composition of numbers to 10. For Marvellous Maths they have enjoyed exploring money through role play shops in their classrooms. Last week we explored positional language and following a route around the classroom.

Our Early Years team created car washes with the children to engage and motivate them to use their fine motor skills when washing small world cars and other vehicles. They produced a lot of bubbles!

This week we began retelling the Gingerbread Man traditional tale through actions and words. Linking to our work on Journeys and maps the children created their own story maps to help them retell the story in sequence. We will keep rehearsing our story telling before sharing we you all on Seesaw. Next week we are going to revisit our mathematical learning on weight and will be creating our own delicious gingerbread biscuits for the children to bring home.

Brilliant Beginning-Journey to Oaken Grove Park!

All of the children (and grown ups too) enjoyed our Brilliant Beginning, which was a journey to Oaken Grove park! We discussed how we were going to get there and talked about being safe on our journey. Mr Wallace ensured that we were extra safe when crossing the road by being our lollipop man and stopping oncoming cars. Despite a rainy start to the week, we were all absolutely thrilled that the sun shone for us on Friday afternoon, which meant the children could make full use of the park once we had arrived. It was wonderful to see so many of our children's grown-up's come along on our journey too - thank you for coming! The children thoroughly enjoyed their first school trip and are excited for their next!

Our Town Map Workshop

Our Early Years children took part in a painting workshop with Amanda from Norden Farm Arts Centre on Wednesday. The workshop, Our Town Map, helped us to launch our Summer Term project on Journeys. The children worked collectively using colour and shape to produce Bumblebee, Caterpillar and Dragonfly Towns. They were extremely proud of their creations and are looking forward to sharing them in our Early Years Exhibition.

Year 1

What a way to begin our new project, We’re Going on an Adventure! by learning so much from our friends about the different places, towns, cities or countries that they had visited or were special to them!  We learnt about a huge variety of places and even listened to some different languages!  It was wonderful to see and hear the children speak so passionately about their chosen place.  Thank you to everyone who spent time preparing the outfits, objects, presentations and also for discussing your children’s ideas with them!

Last week we travelled around the world to visit South Africa, Brazil, New Zealand, Pakistan, Canada and France.  We made our own passports and boarded planes to reach our destinations.  We investigated some of the main physical features, languages, weather and animals found in each of the countries.  We then added some of these to our passports.  We have also been learning about the continents of the world and looking at their similarities and differences.

Our Sticky Knowledge for music has been to play tuned instruments; we have had a lot of fun learning how to play God Save the King on glockenspiels.

During our maths sessions we have continued to look at the place value of numbers to 50.  Our drip feed has been to recognise the UK coins and notes.  We have also been working on the beginnings of multiplication and division by counting in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s, grouping objects into equal groups and drawing arrays.  These concepts fit in with the big idea of unitising: counting in steps of equal sizes and treating a group of, say, five objects as one unit of five.

Year 2

We have had an exciting start to our project 'Wonderful Water!' which we launched with our Brilliant Beginning. We called this our Water Creative Day and enjoyed two creative activities. We explored Hokusai and recreated our versions of his artwork The Great Wave and also created our own class collages of the ocean, thinking about the different marine animals who use the ocean as their habitat.

Continuing with the artistic theme we have also been exploring the work of J.M.W Turner and paying particular attention to his use of watercolour paints. We have been experimenting different techniques we can use to help us in creating our own piece of artwork.

We have also been busy learning about the five different oceans and the different layers of the ocean, creating our own information sheets with illustrations to show what we have found out.

Plastic Pollution has also been a theme we are beginning to investigate, thinking about the impact of this on our oceans, humans, and animals. We have been taking part in our own rescue missions using tweezers and a water tray in our classrooms!

Finally, as mathematicians we have been busy exploring fractions and learning that fractions can be fun! :-)

Year 2 World Earth Day Virtual Assembly

On Monday 22nd April, Year 2 virtually celebrated World Earth Day by participating in a nationwide virtual assembly led by producers of Planet Earth Three in conjunction with Children in Need. They got to watch a variety of clips from Planet Earth III and learn about how they were filmed and produced. It was a great way to celebrate our planet and make brilliant links to our new Summer Term Project: 'Wonderful Water!'

Year 1 Tennis Workshops

We were very excited to have the opportunity to participate in another tennis workshop, this time organised by Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club.  After warming up we worked on controlling the ball on the ground with the racket by pushing it along and then by balancing the ball in the middle of the racket whilst we walked along.  We then practised hitting the ball over the net to the coaches.  We had a lot of fun trying out different skills.

Nurture Group

In nurture, the children have had a good start to the summer term. We have carried out a number of different science experiments, the first predicting how many spoons of salt would be necessary to make an egg float from the bottom of a beaker containing water. The second experiment was called 'dissolve or not dissolve?' and we added a range of items (including flour, coffee, hand sanitiser, salt, sugar, jam etc.) to a cup of water to see if they would dissolve or not. The third experiment involved setting up cups of water containing different food colouring in and then placing a piece of kitchen roll paper to join 2 of the cups. We made observations at different times and we could see some of the colours mixing.

It's been great to get outside to the raised beds in the front playground and we've been planting some beetroot and pak choi plantlets.

Eco Team

Now that the sun is shining we have decided to go outdoors more. This week we have been planting some sunflower seeds so that we can all enjoy watching them grow. We are also hoping to grow the tallest sunflower and each week we will be measuring the height of them. This is a part of our plan to make our outdoor space more Eco friendly so that we can attract more bees and butterflies!

We are also continuing to recycle more batteries and we are pleased to say that we counted a further 29 for the recycling centre. PLEASE do bring in any old batteries, you can hand them to your Teacher.

School Council

School council have been busy thinking about how they have helped FPIS to advertise and raise money throughout the year so far! We have started putting together a video to show everyone the hard work we have done and what it takes to be a on the School Council team! We hope to share this video with the school soon!

FPSA update

Year 2 Quiz

The Year 2 Quiz returned on the 19th April with just under 50 year 2 pupils taking part. Questions and picture rounds covered the areas of history, geography, science & nature, entertainment, literature and sport (a bit like a game of Trivial Pursuit!). Congratulations to the winning team (The Monkeys) and the runners up (The Lions). We all ended up doing a couple of Jump Start Jonny workouts which rounded off the day nicely! Thank you to all parents who supported this event, we hope your children enjoyed it and learned something new.

FPSA team update

The team were delighted to have Sarah, Catherine and Euan join the FPSA recently so we are up to 12 members now.

Summer Fair - Oakwood Estates board sponsorship

Once again, Oakwood Estates are kindly sponsoring our summer fair so parents can sign up to have a board outside their house advertising the fair. We receive money for every house signed up so it is a great way to raise funds for both schools.

We have had a good initial response with 50 households signed up but obviously the more people that sign up, the more money raised for both schools. If you are happy to have a board up outside your house for 2 weeks before the summer fair (Sat 22nd June), please sign up using this link: https://forms.gle/JCmF5JtrvEBJRPsC7

Windsor & Maidenhead Community Lottery

This lottery is a weekly lottery that raises money for good causes in the Royal Borough including the FPSA. Tickets for the lottery cost just £1 and from that 60p goes to good causes including 50p to the FPSA. Each ticket has a 1 in 50 chance to win a prize each week with a top prize of £25,000! So please sign up and buy a weekly ticket or two using the following link: https://www.windsorandmaidenheadcommunitylottery.co.uk/support/furze-platt-schools-association
