Since 1963, FOSIS has supported Muslim students across the UK. Alumni engagement is a critical extension of this work, maintaining a legacy of service and enabling continued development of the Muslim student community. This guide provides foundational knowledge and best practice approaches for ISocs and regional leads seeking to grow and sustain alumni networks.
Alumni can serve as mentors, donors, partners, and advisors. Their life experience and professional insight can support ISoc leadership, provide spiritual mentorship, and unlock career opportunities for Muslim students.
Guest speaking at events and conferences.
Mentoring new committee members.
Fundraising and donating to campaigns.
Opening access to professional networks
Note: Alumni have their own connections to speakers and organisations too!
Individual Alumni: Directly involved with their ISoc or regional activities.
Group Alumni Networks: City-based or university-specific alumni bodies.
National Alumni: FOSIS legacy members who served at the national level.
"The believers are but one brotherhood, so make peace between your brothers. And be mindful of Allah so you may be shown mercy" (49:10)
Follow this guided roadmap to initiate, grow, and sustain a thriving alumni network for your ISoc. The key is to start by identifying your alumni landscape and then establishing a clear framework for sustained communication and engagement.
Data is the foundation of any successful alumni network. Here’s a framework for ISocs to collect and leverage their alumni data effectively:
The Method: Create a user-friendly and secure form (like a Google Form) to collect data. This form should be designed to capture key information about alumni, including their years of service, professional fields, and their preferred method of engagement.
The Timing: The best time to collect this information is when outgoing members are closest to the ISoc. Pounce on that moment! Conduct a final meeting or survey for outgoing committee members and active volunteers to collect their details before they leave.
Data Security: Always make people aware that this information is secure. Showcase the value of the network (e.g., mentorship, career advice, and connections) to encourage them to share their data. People need to understand what's in it for them to be willing to contribute.
ISocs can plan a variety of events and activities to keep alumni engaged:
Mentorship Programmes: Pair new committee members with experienced alumni in a mentoring capacity.
Professional Panels & Workshops: Invite alumni to speak at events on career development, entrepreneurship, or other relevant topics.
Alumni-Specific Socials: Organise regular dinners, get-togethers, or family picnics for alumni to reconnect with each other and the current ISoc committee.
By collaborating with FOSIS, your ISoc can provide alumni with access to a wider network and more impactful initiatives:
FOSIS Alumni Retreats: Regional retreats designed for alumni - now often working professionals of a similar age - to connect with peers, share professional insights, and build a powerful support network.
The FOSIS Alumni Network: A national network that connects alumni from across the UK, creating a powerful collective body.
The IHSAAN Mentoring Network: A dedicated mentorship program run by FOSIS to connect alumni with current students.
Understanding the legal and ethical considerations of alumni engagement is crucial for protecting your ISoc and your members' privacy.
Always gain consent when collecting alumni data; give a clear disclaimer in your forms. Use secure platforms (like Google Forms or Notion) for storing information. Avoid overcommunication or making data public without explicit permission to maintain trust and privacy.
Be clear that alumni engagement is an extension of ISoc activity, not a replacement for active student-led leadership. This ensures the ISoc remains a dynamic, student-run body and avoids the perception that alumni are running the show. Avoid pressure to donate and keep the relationship focused on mutual benefit and respect.
