The Importance of PLNs (Professional Learning Networks)
Professional educators foster a love of learning and strive to inspire others to become lifelong learners by being lifelong learners themselves. This means staying connected to other educators and seeking to continually acquire new knowledge, skills, strategies, and experiences. A Personal or Professional Learning Network is a tool that can be used to connect with colleagues through social media and technology in order to collect ideas, communicate, collaborate and create (Morris, 2018). Personal Learning Networks give educators an opportunity to connect with others around the world at any time and in a way that fits their own learning style. The educator can choose what tools they use, who they connect with, how they want to learn, and when they want to learn (Morris, 2018). Technology is constantly changing and "upgrading". Therefore, it is even more important that educators stay current to keep up with the fast-paced world of technology in education. PLNs are important for all teachers from Kindergarten teachers to single subject educators, because technology is used for all subjects and at all ages and stages. In the Common Core State Standards, the use of technology is integrated in the content standards. This means that math teachers, science teachers, and even P.E. teachers need to stay up to date with the latest technology. The most effective way to stay current is by connecting with other educators in a Professional Learning Network.

The International Society of Technology in Education Standards are necessary for 21st Century Educators. They give a framework for the educator's role of using technology in the classroom and helping to empower students, practice equity, promote collaboration, and challenge educators to streamline the use of technology with the latest studies for effectiveness of classroom technology. The “ISTE Standards for Educators” challenge educators to rethink traditional approaches to technology in the classroom and prepare students to drive their own learning (ISTE Standards for Educators, 2017).
