Committees

 LUC committees are...

Fiber Crafts

Fiber Crafts is a space for all experienced or aspiring creatives to relax after a stressful week. Whether you’re looking to learn knitting, crochet, or just want some company while working on your own project, you are welcome at our weekly meetings. For beginners, we provide materials and guidance to get started with your first project. You can also look forward to fun workshops throughout the year, including tie-dye or jewellery making! Through our collaboration with the local charity Wool for Warmth, you can help a good cause by donating some of your creations to homeless people in the Hague.

Meditation

Welcome to the Meditation Committee – your gateway to inner peace and calm amidst the university hustle. Whether you're a seasoned meditator or just starting out, everyone is welcome. Our committee is all about diving into self-discovery and cultivating a deeper understanding of ourselves. Through a variety of meditation techniques, we guide you on a journey to mental silence and tranquility. It's not just about the meditation itself; we're a tight-knit community, where sharing experiences is as essential as finding serenity. So, take a break from the LUC-buzz and join us for our weekly sessions and thematic events such as Beach Yoga, Hugging Meditation, Forest Meditation or Acting Meditation. Together, we'll create meaningful connections and spread self-awareness within our bubble.

PRISMxPAX

PRISM is a platform for Leiden University College (LUC) students to engage in progressive policy discussions related to contemporary global challenges. It mainly serves as a publication center for student-authored op-eds, policy proposals and bachelor theses. Our mission is to promote progressive policy ideas for a more equitable, just world — with a focus on communities historically denied political power.

PAX lends a platform for the expression of student ideas, interests and general creative elements. As PAX is a student-run initiative, we welcome any and all contributions, whether it manifests in art, event reporting, short stories, editorial pieces, photography and beyond. Each block's PAX magazine is created by students and for students, intending to enrich and stimulate the lives of fellow LUCers. On top of that, we aim to keep the community informed about important information with regards to student representation and governance in our blockly digital newsletter, PAX Next.

LUC.id

Through the use of various forms of media, LUC.identities (LUC.id) aims to document and showcase the identity of Leiden University College, through its building, events, staff and students. Whether it be incoming first years who want to understand what the LUC community is like, or students and alumni looking back at the great memories they made, the content made by LUC.id aims to be timeless.

We do this through diverse contents, both online and offline in the form of both video and photography series. Our video series include year-old traditions, such as “LUC Cribs” which showcases how LUC students decorate their rooms and “Songbook” in which students get the chance to talb about their music tase,  but we are also working on some exciting new video projects. Our photography series include taking pictures of events, a collaborations with PRISMxPAX, and hosting photography exhibitions.

As part of LUC.id, you have the creative freedom and access to resources that allows you to create your own project capturing the identities at LUC.

Visual Arts

In the visual arts committee we do all kinds of events to let the creative mind roam free. Some of these events include collage-making, clay modelling, sketching around the city, and our most popular event: life drawings! You may also find us doing some cool projects with other committees.

We have weekly events with different activities each time, so for instance if you like working with your hands but are not particularly into painting, surely there will be an event throughout the block that you might enjoy!

FilmCo

FilmCo is the perfect committee for all LUC movie lovers! This year, we plan to organize multiple movie screenings for each block, have the student-produced short film, and attend film festivals around the Netherlands! With this committee, we wish to offer opportunities for you to socialize with fellow movie lovers, expand your movie taste, and even dabble in filmmaking! So, if you want to take a break from academics and instead catch a film in our cozy common room move nights, then definitely stay up to date on future FilmCo events. We will also collaborate with other committees to hopefully enrich your movie-watching experience. Hope to see you there!

Language Cafe

Hello! ¡hola!, مرحبًا!, hoi!, こんにちは!, bonjour! Do you want to practice or learn a new language? Do you feel like you have spoken too much English at university and are forgetting your native tongue? Want to know what to say in a restaurant in Dutch? Want to have snacks whilst engaging in conversation in a multi-cultural setting? Then the language café is the perfect LUC committee for you! This year language café will organize different activities to highlight the diversity within our community and bring you some lekker gesprek! Analog

Analog photography is a lengthy and challenging process. Nowadays we tend to develop and have our strips of films scanned at camera stores, however, this abandons some integral parts of the procedure. With AnalogLUC providing the necessary equipment and guidance, you will master all three steps of the classic photography process, by shooting, developing, and enlarging these pictures yourself. Each block, new LUC students have the chance to discover this creative world.

SexCo

Sex.Co is the dedicated committee within Fortuna focused on fostering a healthy understanding of sexual health, relationships, and intimacy. We provide educational workshops, a resource hub, and open conversations to empower students in making informed decisions about their sexual wellbeing. Join us in promoting open, respectful, and informed discussions about sexuality. Through the work of our committee, we aim to create an environment in which conversations on all topics, especially those considered taboo, are made possible. We hope to not only create space for these conversations, but also have them be framed without judgement, while encouraging self-reflection and mutual understanding. These conversations support, empower, and educate students at LUC. This is especially important considering the fact that LUC students have received a wide range of education regarding physical, sexual and mental health in their previous education systems. In a close and intense community like LUC, we want to enable students to ask necessary questions openly, take care and reflect on themselves, and raise awareness of everyone's own responsibility to make LUC an open-minded and safe space for all students. SexCo is the platform in which these conversations are facilitated and guided.

Vogue

Vogue is LUC’s Fashion Committee. We organize events for anyone interested in fashion, whether you enjoy unleashing your creativity through clothing or are an aspiring model yourself – you are most welcome to participate!

Our activities relate to fashion in the broadest sense of the word – from educating about the fashion industry and its (climate) ethics to making jewelry or up-cycling your old clothes into something new. We strive to make our events accessible to everyone, so that anyone who is interested can participate, regardless of your (fashion) aesthetic, knowledge, or resources.

22FM

22 FM hosts bi-weekly radio shows to the LUC community, allowing students to listen to music of all genres and cultures as well as providing a platform for LUC voices and talent.

22 FM provides a platform for individuals and groups to promote their events and air their perspectives reaching all corners of LUC. Even for those who don’t make it on air, we are routinely engaged with students getting song requests and questions from our audiences.

Last year, 22FM managed to host pure music shows, provide controversial content and engage with willing committees. We were most proud of our shows ‘Sicky Sweet’ (Valentines Day Show) as well as our ‘Major Review’ show in which 2nd and 3rd years were able to discuss their thoughts on how to best choose a major that fits for you. The broad range of topics 22fm covers shows that it is also a very flexible committee that can talk both sex and academics.

SportsCo

SportsCo’s mission is to function as a link between all those different sport committees and Fortuna. Thus, for example, it ensures that every SportsCo sport receives its money through assisting in the captain’s budget proposals. In that sense, its task is mainly administrative. Moreover, SportsCo frequently collaborates with other LUC committees and boards in order to organize events or on its own, stay tuned for those.

Volleyball

Welcome to LUC Volleyball, a place where every LUC student can come to play volleyball regardless of their level. We provide trainings for beginners and advanced players. We aim to create an environment where everyone can challenge themselves and at the same time have fun.

On top of the trainings we want to do some additional team building in the form of drinks after practices. We also want to organize games with other UC´s and if COVID-19 allows it we will be competing in the UCSRN tournament.

Basketball

LUC has a mixed basketball team! This team has practice once every week in an indoor sports hall (usually Sporthal Overbosch). Practices consist of drills in which we develop our fundamentals, as well as much scrimmage in which we learn to play ball with an against each other.

Each year we participate in the UCSRN Tournament (here, all UC’s in the Netherlands play a tournament against each other). In the hopes that this tournament can happen despite Covid: the ultimate goal is to train and prepare hard enough that we can take home the trophy at the end of the year. The past two times UCSRN’s, the basketball team lost the final in the last seconds to Rotterdam’s University College, TWICE.

However, even if UCSRN does not happen, being part of the basketball team will bring you the fun and competition you’re looking for. Come try it out!

Handball

Hey guys! We’re Chloé, Sine and Nora and we can’t wait to bring handball to LUC this year. With this committee we hope to introduce some of you to handball, if you’re new to it, or challenge those of you whom have already played. We will have practices once a week, and will start with a warm-up outside and move inside for one hour to play some handball. Of course the fun will continue outside of the field, with exciting activities like dinners, drinks and many more fun things in the 3rd half of the game.

Handball will enable you to work on your cardio when you will have to run up and down the field many times, your strength when you will have to defend and stop an attacker, your explosivity when you will de 1 vs 1 in attack, your team-work capabilities when you will have to communicate with your 6 other teammates on the field (and outside the field…) and most of all your fun spirit will be needed at all times on and outside the field!

Hockey

Hey there, great to see you are interested in the LUC field hockey team!

If you are looking for a way to blow off some steam and take a break from studying, join us on Wednesdays at 19:30 on Floor 0. We will take you out of the bubble to all the way to Hockey Club Klein Zwitserland, and spend a fun evening together playing sports and hanging out.

The LUC team is one of the many student hockey teams at the club, so if you want to meet other students from The Hague (or ruthlessly defeat them in a match), there are plenty of opportunities for that. Our team consists of students from different years and levels of experience. After practice we always have a drink and play games together.

Those who are interested can register as a student at the hockey club and take part in different events and matches. Every year, our team plays a couple matches against other Dutch UC’s, including at the UCSRN tournament, which is a really fun way of getting to know new people, as well as seeing our efforts from practice pay off!

Want to be a part of the team or simply try out a new sport? Join us at the open practices in Week 1 and 2. See you there!

Swimming

Hi all, LUC Swim is a small community of people who enjoy swimming, be it in the morning or late at night, both leisurely and competitively. We are Jindra Hartog and Marleen Onnekes, this year’s LUC Swim captains, and we are looking forward to provide you with swim practices for those who want to learn how to improve their technique, do a full-body workout or simply swim for the fun of it.

Jindra has a background in competitive swimming and technical coaching, whereas Marleen did canoeing on a national level and will be focused on the conditioning aspect, for those interested. We hope to be able to create an enjoyable practice for swimmers with ranging skill levels. We plan on providing set time slots twice per week in which we will be coaching the swimmers, and we will provide written training plans that the swimmers can use in their own time. Apart from that, we want to create a community of swimmers who can connect both before and after practice. Therefore, we also want to include an after-training breakfast, lunch or dinner depending on the time of day. We hope to see you all at practice!

Climbing

LUC Climbing is a committee that aims to introduce people to both sport climbing and bouldering, as well as facilitate climbing together for people already familiar with the sport. Climbing is a great way to work out, as it requires you to use almost all muscle groups. At the same time, climbing at heights also builds confidence and trust in those you climb with.

Women's football

The team is open to anyone and all skill levels are welcome! We get together twice a week to practice at the Duindorp sportpark and are also a part of the HVV Football Factory association. We also organize some fun team nights from time to time! Feel free to sign, we’re happy for you to join!

Badminton

We are a relatively new and small committee as the committee was established last year, however, we are all motivated and have had a fun time. Our activity is mainly divided into two sections. One is playing badminton every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with the local badminton club BC Drop Shot. You can choose how many days per week you want to play, but most of the members go once or twice a week. It is a nice opportunity to exercise as well as get out of the LUC as there will be interaction with local people.

No worries if you haven’t played badminton before, there will be beginners' training on Wednesdays so that you can learn how to play badminton! Another one is a fun badminton session which we are trying to implement for the first time this year. This is an opportunity for those who do not want to play badminton every week but want to try badminton. This will be only with LUC students and will be held once in two blocks or more depending on the interests of members. We are looking forward to welcoming new members.

Men's football

I am Maximilian Olmos-van Velden, captain of this year’s LUC Men’s Football Team. The team and I are very excited for this season to start and cannot wait to begin training. For the first time in LUC history, an inter-UC league has been established consisting of various UC’s around the Netherlands that will compete all year long. This year, the team is looking to take on this challenge by working hard together with the goal of establishing LUC as the best football program out of all competing UC’s.

With the balanced blend of second and third years already in the squad and the expected arrival of a first-year group, this year’s team will provide a positive and unified atmosphere within the group through which competition and the love for the game will be fundamental aspects to the program. We are excited to rebuild a football spirit at this university and hope to see you guys at our matches!

LUCMUN

Model United Nations is a familiar activity to many of you, as you probably took part in them during high school. To some, it would have been a fun extra-curricular involving fancy clothes and fabulous parties, while for others it was an opportunity to engage with the challenges we face as a global community and attempt to tackle them. Here at LUC, both of these interpretations are key aspects of MUN life; One can’t have a lavish social without having to defend their country’s interests first, and likewise all work and no play would drive anyone up a wall.

We at LUCMUN hope to provide you with an educating and entertaining MUN experience. We are revamping our pre conference Prep track to teach new delegates important skills such as negotiation, public speaking and resolution writing. We will also temper these lessons with delegation bonding sessions at pubs once a week, where you can share a drink with your new friends.

The COVID 19 Pandemic has forced us to move the first semester’s conferences and prep track online, but rest assured they will be just as good as any other MUN experience. These prep tracks will also prepare you for the in person conferences we hope to attend in semester 2! Applications are open to all students for all conferences, and more information will be provided during the committee fair in week 2. Applications open at the end of September, and we hope to see you there!

LUC Volunteering

The LUC Volunteer committee provides students a chance to step outside the “bubble” by contributing to the community of the Hague, in particular by aiding those who are at a disadvantage, which can be financially and/ or physically. Students can acquire new skills and evolve further by meeting new people from LUC as well as people from the Hague. This results in students expanding their network by coming in contact with different groups and subcultures within the city.

Furthermore, this committee brings English speaking students in contact with local volunteering work and organizations around the city. It may also act as a starting point for students to become long-term volunteers or as an extracurricular activity that may provide a break from academics.

The LUC Volunteer Committee organizes volunteering activities year-round and aims to help those in need in our surroundings. These volunteering activities range from more practical activities, such as painting, to more social activities, like going for a walk with elderly people.

Act Aware

Act Aware is the sustainability committee of Leiden University College. We busy ourselves with all the issues, ideas and events regarding sustainability in and around the university.

Events we have organized in the past were zero waste workshops, sustainable decoration workshops, movie screening, panel discussions and outings, such as to the sustainable fashion show. Ideas for events are always welcome and we love collaborating with other committees, organizations and students! For this year, we have planned an rainforest run, a vegan buffet, a sustainability (pub) quiz and more.

However, one of our goals is also to improve LUC structurally. Therefore, we are actively working toward getting recycling bins back for the LUC building, as well as make the cafeteria and Coasters more sustainable. Again, we are open to all ideas for structural improvements, too!

Further, it is one of our regular tasks to take care of the lovely garden on the terrace, and thus keep up LUC’s own (urban) green space. Any person with green fingers is very much invited to put their hands in our very own LUC soil.

Although we are but a student committee, we believe it is unbelievably important to dedicate ourselves to sustainability. In our opinion, in every moment, there is the possibility of a better future.

Career Committee

Life after LUC is waiting for us, once we have finished our three years here. However, only a few of us have a clear notion of the possibilities that lie ahead of us. Finding internships can be difficult and sometimes jobs have prerequisite requirements that you were largely unaware of. As the newly founded career committee, our goal is to connect LUC students to the possibilities that the future holds for them.

Through speaker events and workshops, such as contact moments with alumni and workshops on how to improve your CV, we will try and make the possibilities for life after LUC more approachable. On top of that, we aim to provide help and guidance through our events that will have an emphasis on how to prepare and present yourself in the world of masters and jobs.
