Students gather on the football field to watch the Solar Eclipse
The Class of 2024 was first united in August of 2017 when we entered Highlands Middle School and became Bluebirds, and now in the Spring of 2024, we are about to leave the nest. Coincidentally there were also two “once in a lifetime” events that took place in the fall of 2017 and the spring of 2024 to unite this class.
On Monday, August 21, 2017, the students of the Class of 2024 were in the sixth grade. We had to stay at school an extra hour later because the total solar eclipse was happening at dismissal time. The students were sent out to the football field, each student receiving a pair of solar eclipse glasses.
Six years later, on Monday, April 8, 2024, there was another eclipse. As seniors in high school, the Class of 2024 did not have to stay at school while the eclipse occurred. Thus, we scattered, watching at home with family members, staying at school, or driving to places like Shelbyville, Indiana to be in the path of totality. Everyone went their different ways, similar to what will happen upon graduation in May 2024.
A pair of eclipse glasses may seem insignificant, but they represent the growth and change that the Class of ‘24 has experienced throughout our time as Bluebirds, from sixth grade to senior year. The glasses are a symbol of the “once in a lifetime” event that was to be a part of the spectacular group of students that make up the Highlands High School Class of 2024.
