In this experience students explore the driving question: "What is the impact of single use plastics on our environment and as citizens how can we prevent plastics from being used, sold or bought, and what is your solution to better manage plastics already being used?"
Students shared their learning at a STEAM night through a panel discussion, activities around school and in the National Geographic GeoChallenge.
To answer the driving question "As concerned students, how can we draw comparisons to There's an Owl in the Shower and share with our community the impact of the JES construction on the existing habitat and native organisms that live here?" students engaged in interdisciplinary PBL that combined a study of the novel There's an Owl in the Shower and a study of the internal and external features that help a species survive as well as environmental facts that are needed for optimal survival.
To help reduce the impact of construction on the habitat, students presented their findings to parents and community members at the school's STEAM night.
Students explored the driving question: "How can we make an award nominate book come to life for a reader?"
In this project, through the libraries, students used the Kentucky Book Award Nominees as inspiration to create adaptations that would engage younger students in some way. Projects ranged from creating plays to puppet shows to digital presentations and 3D printed components for games.
They shared their work on school STEAM nights and with younger classes of students.
The driving question: " As producers, how do we fund, develop, and market a product that consumers will want to buy?" has been through a number of different years in working.
The first year students worked with the Fort Thomas Sesquicentennial Committee to develop souvenirs that could be sold, they have also designed cups to raise awarness about causes, and in most recent times have developed items to remember the way their school was before it was torn down to build new.
For this first grade Social Studies unit, students explore the driving question: How did our past influence our present and what does that mean for our future?
For this unit, students work in their classes, with the librarian and PE teacher to consider a variety of topics. They then consider the past and ways they might improve the future.
