Complete an internship at a local school. You will be off campus at your placement 4 days a week partnering with a mentor teacher, planning lessons, and working with students.
Course Information:
The Teaching as a Profession Practicum is a semester long internship block class. The internship will take place second semester of Level 2 (Contemporary Issues in Education). Students will be placed with a mentor teacher at one of our cluster Elementary or Middle schools. Students will attend their internship Tuesday-Friday to get real-world experience in the field (students will attend class at LHS with Coach Tighe every Monday). Students will be evaluated using the Georgia Best evaluation form for Teaching as a Profession. Students will submit monthly assignments and rubrics which can be found on the "Practicum Resources" page of this site. Coach Tighe will also come visit students in their placements to see the amazing things they are doing in the field!
Course Expectations:
Be professional and respectful in their behavior, dress, and attendance for the duration of the internship.
Inform mentor and course instructor if they are going to be absent.
Be on time!
Sign in/out daily at internship site as well as check-in with course instructor upon returning to SFHS.
Adhere to confidentiality and school safety guidelines.
Dress Professionally. (The students should not wear shorts, short dresses/skirts, tank tops, t-shirts, leggings, or jeans with excessive holes in them.) Masks and name badges are mandatory.
Provide opportunities for discovery and growth for the practicum student-interns.
Treat practicum students as an adult in the classroom and encourage your students to call them Mr. or Miss.
Put practicum student to work and challenge them!
Evaluate practicum students monthly - provide honest, constructive feedback so the students can grow.
Verify practicum student hours monthly on a time sheet provided by the student.
Optional: Invite the student-intern to any additional school related activities that will help them fully understand a teacher’s responsibilities.
Provide detailed communication and constant support for interns and mentor teachers.
Make regular site visits to observe students in the classroom. I will always notify you in advance.
Provide feedback to students after observations.
Proofread assignments and provide copies of assignments in advance.
Prepare students for classroom experiences, as much as possible.
Address concerns in a timely manner.
Communication is the ultimate key to the success of this program.
