(Performance-Based Assessments)
STEM K12 10: Students demonstrate their learning through performance-based assessments and have opportunities to develop self-assessment and self-monitoring skills.
Impact Narrative:
At Kelly Mill, we understand that having the ability to self-assess and having a growth mindset significantly impacts students' ability to face challenges and persevere through many obstacles, both in the classroom and in their everyday lives. Using the FCS Learner Profile as a guideline, our students are encouraged to utilize creative and critical thinking skills to solve problems. They have the opportunity to engage in conversations and contribute to their learning with many student-led activities that encourage the pursuit of continuous learning and develop the interpersonal skills necessary to work collaboratively with peers.
Kelly Mill learners exemplify a growth mindset during class meetings where they can set goals before learning a new topic, then assess what they learned and how they can improve. Teachers plan active lessons that utilize the CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) model. This allows students to make a claim about a problem and work through a hands-on experiment to see if the evidence supports their claim. Presently, fourth and fifth-grade students at Kelly Mill compete in the Georgia Stock Market Game. What started as an isolated venture for identified gifted students has grown into all fifth grade getting the opportunity to compete in this simulation. We continue to be the top-ranking school each year. All students have access to STEMscopes as a resource to learn, apply, and assess various Science skills.
A shared vision for students' self-assessment goals is to add check-ins through personalized learning and align learning targets in science to further develop students' self-monitoring skills. Another school-wide plan is for all students across Kelly Mill to utilize stem journals to reflect on their learning and make necessary iterations.
