STEM K12 1: School/program provides equitable opportunities for students to engage in high quality STEM learning.
Impact Narrative:
The fundamental goal of Kelly Mill Elementary School leadership, educators, and community stakeholders is to provide equitable opportunities for all students to engage in the highest quality of effective STEM education. Through our five tenants (Colts Who Care, Wisdom Seekers, Difference Makers, World Changers, and Family), students in grades pre-K through 5 are encouraged and empowered to explore and engage in a wide range of student-led and faculty facilitated learning.
Kelly Mill has indoor and outdoor facilities with community partnerships through our local Partners in Education and businesses to offer students quality STEM instruction. For example, outside the general education classrooms, Kelly Mill has a science lab used for specialty classes and hands-on labs, STEAM, and a math closet accessible to our school community with tools, equipment, and manipulatives. Kelly Mill students also participate in many in-house and off-site field trips. Students across the school building have opportunities to explore and engage in are:
Our summer STEAM camp.
Annual extra-curricular clubs (math club, robotics, art club, and drama productions).
Student-choice wisdom hour.
School-wide competitions such as the Toy Box Challenge competition and Junkyard Wars.
Students explain, elaborate, and evaluate their learning upon completing hands-on student involvement. These final steps of the 5E model are actions that our school is focused on enhancing as the years progress. Kelly Mill plans to further develop our school-wide STEM learning and instruction by acquiring consistent language and vocabulary across all grade levels. We will also implement daily STEM journals and lesson plans developed by a dedicated team of STEM-focused leaders and facilitators to ensure that all students have the opportunity to engage in STEM learning.
