Let’s do a fun mini-project to introduce you to creating terrains and environments in Unity! It's really cool and involves only a little bit of coding (a script you can use is provided)!
Introducing..The Winter Wonderland Project! For this project, you’ll create a terrain in Unity and include elements listed below. Then, we will share them in a class Snow Globe Collection!
Preview Steps 1-7 below, and then follow the steps to create your wonderland!!!
What you're experimenting with in this project can lead to a range of career options!
Check out this awesome video from Riot Studios. It's all about how artists build environments in games, and it's fascinating! Environment Art is a key component of a game- taking up over 90% of the screen!
Review the examples of a Terrain project in the 2 videos below!
Watch the "Getting Started" video below! (The other 2 are optional.)
P.S. OmarVision is an awesome resource for all kinds of game dev resources!
Using what you learned in the tutorial(s), create your Winter Wonderland!!! The script is available below.
Include the following elements, at minimum:
Mountains or other landforms
Trees, plants, or other vegetation (animated)
Snow, flames or other particle animations
Ability to move around the scene as a player
A range of colors/textures
Sound effects or music (optional)
Wacky is encouraged!!! You don’t have to use green grass and gray rock textures. Want a Dr. Seuss Land? Make it happen! Want a Willy Wonka Land? Do it! Hate snow? Make fireworks! Gonna be a weird snow globe collection...but you do you! Own your cringe.
Script: Here is the code you can use to move your player around the scene! Simply copy and paste it in Visual Studio, etc.
Tips: When searching for textures, look for seamless textures. Also- make sure it’s free and not copyrighted! Same for any 3-D models you import!
Note: If this is your JAM...your dream project…you can try the series of tutorials ("Build a Virtual World") linked below instead, which were made from a teacher in my Unity Educator network. I haven’t tried these ones yet, but I quickly scanned through them and they look amazing!!
Once your world is complete, build your project for WebGL. (You did this in Create with Code, but here's a refresher in lesson 6.3: Sharing your Projects!) Make sure that you publish a weblink, not a file that has to be downloaded :)
On your Itch.io project page, be sure to include:
Thumbnail image
Brief description
Directions for how to navigate the scene
Citations to credit any assets you used (if applicable)
Submit your itch.io project link in the drop box on itslearning. Mrs. Ryko will add it to the Snow Globe Collection for the class!
Check out all of the projects you and your classmates have created by viewing the Snow Globe Collection page on itch.io!
Create a new page on your Portfolio and title it "Pet Projects."
On the "Pet Projects" page, include the link to your itch.io project, or embed it! Then, write a brief description of what you created!
Really, really loving all of this? Feel free to check out the additional tutorials and resouces on the Pet Projects portion of our site!
