Activity 1
Date: 5/14/2021
Mr. James Loftin, CEO
Type of Activity: Video Conferencing with Students
Mr. Loftin spoke with students about his success story, including areas he had to grow in as he made his way to managing his firm. James was very thorough. He gave them examples of good and bad interviews he had been through and how he handled them. The follow up was even more impactful. My students wrote him thank you cards and he requested to speak with them again. He went through each thank you note and helped the students develop details surrounding the ambiguous statements they made. He spoke with each student about how reaching their goals needed those types of details. This was truly an impactful learning moment for the students.

James Loftin
CEO
Type of Activity: Site Visit
The GER Wealth Management team hosted Jarrod Shirley (Entrepreneurship) at their office to discuss gaps in student-intern candidates. The conversation was held in the main conference room. Two members of leadership, a student-intern from Denmark High School, and a Financial Advisor were present for the conversation. The firm recommended a vertical shift in teaching students how to think about projects. In short, the concept of thinking through potential problems and creating plans to navigate those issues prior to encountering them was the goal. Since that meeting, I adjusted two major projects and awarded formative grades for doing prep exercises such as Tech Checks, setting NORMS for group work, and establishing communication protocols. Compared to the previous project, the revised expectations resulted in a significant decrease in the amount of late work turned in to the project drop-box.
