Ideas for Teachers
Students go to a series of stations set up to test their senses. This activity is always a fan favorite and provides hands-on experience for difficult content.
Stations include color gradient puzzle, perception goggles obstacle course, essential oil testing, and the infamous Skittles lab.
When you have students complete a personality survey, send it to the staff at your school as well. I create a master spreadsheet so everyone can see who shares their personality type. The kids love to see which teachers they have things in common with.
A common team-building exercise is the "Marshmallow Challenge". Students are given a yard of tape, a yard of string, 20 pieces of uncooked spaghetti, and one jumbo marshmallow. The task is to build the tallest tower possible in 20 minutes. The marshmallow must be at the top of the tower and no other materials can be used.
Students will construct a 3D model of the brain made of the material of their choice - preferably not PlayDoh or food. The model must be divided in half so the inner structures can be identified as well as the outer lobes. They must also type a list of the function of each structure and what would happen if the structure is damaged/stimulated on a separate sheet of paper.
Past examples include using sequins, fake flowers, beads, and Legos.
Despite being in high school, students still love to play with chalk. We often take the opportunity of decent weather in the fall to take to kids outside and have them draw diagrams of the neuron and explain the process of neurotransmission.
There are dozens of real-world examples in psychology, and we can use this to our advantage when teaching. If there is a unit that is tricky or especially heavy with vocabulary, assign a scavenger hunt! Give kids a list of terms and make them go find examples around the school or from the media.
