Ratio is a guiding concept that describes how much thought is taking place in your classroom (Teach Like a Champion, Doug Lemov)
Participation ratio: how many of your students are participating and how often?
Think ratio: when they are participating, how hard are they thinking?
In this module, we will be considering Ratio during Phase 2 of our EDI framework
EDI Phase 5.2 Reviewing learning:
Display the DPR KO/class view, review the learning from the lesson and change KO judgements live.
Celebrate this.
A great motivator: create opportunities to experience success, early and often (Mcrea, 2020)
Ownership: KO view is a visual reminder that they are in control of their learning
Increase participation ratio: A great tool to make them think!
Stand at swivel
Students don't notice your presence
Call for SLANT and establish silence
Low level talking
Be Seen Looking and ask question
Teacher unaware of students off-task
Cold Call and Reinforce
Thinking time is not given. Low Ratio.
Change KO judgement
Feeling successful is not normal in the lesson
...ensures students have packed up and in SLANT with a clear countdown
...ensure high think ratio using cold calling
...has created a positive class environment where students are celebrating for each others' success!
Get the wording of your questioning right. Set them up to succeed.
Provide appropriate thinking time. A ‘pause’ is not long enough.
Increase your participation ratio by using the 5 strategies from this session.
