Antecedent:
Avoid misbehaviour before it happens.
Remind students of merits/the Golden Ticket given last lesson and the opportunities that lesson.
Tell them the best way to gain these is through STEPS SHAPE SLANT.
The antecedent, which means ‘something that comes before’, can be anything that triggers a given behaviour. It could be good or bad.
Positive behaviours subsequently result in positive consequences (and negative behaviours, negative consequences.)
In teaching, we use hundreds of antecedents and often we don’t even realise it. But if we were to be conscious of them, imagine how many more positive behaviours we could elicit from our students?
There are lots of positive teacher antecedents that exist in our playbook. Here are some examples:
Threshold
Narrating the positive
swivel
Updating DPR
Live marking
Front loading with means of participation
Be Seen Looking
Positive framing
Actively monitoring
Hand gestures (hand signal to stop) + proximity (walking close)
Quick positive verbal to whole class! All should be tracking me
Avoid shaming
Catch those you may have missed
Everyone should be writing now… just waiting for couple more people…
Encourages self regulation
Addresses with respect
Address pupil whilst class are working. Strategy 1 can be deployed here
(Squat & whisper) You need to focus so you can progress…
1. Name pupil
2. VR and state expectation
3. Positive comment about someone/something else
4. Praise pupil’s change
Francis1 - that’s a reminder, pen in hand2. Great focus Shuab!3 Thank you Francis4.
Praise a student 1:1 in precise detail - this will build trust, respect and relationships
Hapsa, that answer you gave was seriously impressive - love the choice of vocabulary especially.
