Themes of Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching underscores the dignity of every human being and emphasize the importance of solidarity and the common good within our society. Sensationalizing crime stories often goes against these principles by marginalizing individuals and prioritizing entertainment value over respect for the human being and soul. As Pope Francis has frequently emphasized, the media has a responsibility to uphold truth and promote the dignity of individuals, rather than exploiting their suffering for entertainment purposes. This can be linked back to the principles in the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, which advocate for a media culture that fosters understanding, compassion, and solidarity among all communities.

"Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions."

Proverbs 18:2 warns against reckless or rash speech by highlighting the dangers of prioritizing personal opinions over understanding and facts.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

Philippians 4:8 encourages us to focus on what is true, noble, right, and pure, rather than indulging in sensational or negative content.

"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep."

Romans 12:15 speaks on empathy and compassion towards others, urging us to share in the highs and lows of our peers and human beings.
