Themes of Catholic Social Teaching

Rights and Responsibilities

The Catholic tradition teaches that if human rights aren't protected and responsibilities met, there will be no healthy community of protection of human dignity. In Isaiah 1:16-17  it says “Seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.” It is important to advocate, and it is important to protect everyone's human rights. Even of those who cannot protect themselves.

Loving Thy Enemies

It is important to be forgiving and to love all. To love your enemy is a great strength. In Luke 6:27-28 it says “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” The injustice in Haiti was caused by the community outside of the country, leaving them with tremendous underlying issues. But most of the people of the country just want change, and continue to make connections with the outside community seeking help, despite the history.
