ACTIVISTS

ACTIVISTS

Activists, such as Grace Lee Boggs and Corky Lee have worked to end the injustice of the racism and anti-immigration bias toward Asian-Americans that is barring Asian-Americans from achieving success. They have come before me and paved the way for those of us to continue this fight. They have set great examples for us through their actions and their insights.

GRACE LEE BOGGS

Grace Lee Boggs was an activist who contributed to this fight for justice. Her work aligns with my vision for reform, as she lived a life of social activism and fought for social change through the combined efforts of small groups. She believes that joined efforts by multiple small groups can truly create social change in the world, as opposed to a sudden large revolution started by a dominating group. I share this belief, and she inspired me to create this platform to continuously share my efforts for social change and social justice. Despite there being a great deal of attention on the media now in regards to the injustices done toward the Asian-American community, the actions that we can take to spread awareness, educate others, and end this issue does not end with the media attention that it is now receiving. Small groups fighting for this cause will need to continuously fight for justice and to end this injustice.

CORKY LEE

Corky Lee worked to spread awareness about the injustices that Asian-Americans were facing as a result of racism and anti-immigration bias. In particular, Lee took photographs and documented specific hate-related incidents committed toward the Asian-American community. Through this, he was able to spread awareness and bring to light the harsh actions done toward Asian-Americans as a result of racism-related hate. Specifically, one picture that he took of a Chinese teenager being assaulted by the police gained attention and ended up on the front page of The New York Post. This photograph taken by Lee sparked marches in Chinatown New York City, protesting police brutality and hate toward Asian-Americans. His work inspired me and again emphasized the importance of awareness and reporting hate crimes. In my vision for my engagement, I strive to also spread awareness about the hate crimes and abuses toward the Asian-American community and educate others about how wrong it is.
