In addition to individual band classes, we also have a wonderful staff of private lesson instructors. Each instructor is an expert on their individual instruments, and has been individually selected by the directors to serve our students.
Private lesson teachers demonstrate a professional tone on their instrument. Just as babies learn to talk by listening to others, instrumentalists develop their characteristic sound by hearing it played.
Students have the opportunity to perform solo weekly and receive detailed feedback. In band, solo performances are infrequent, and feedback is often brief. Weekly individual performances foster confidence and independence, allowing for extensive feedback, retries, and continuous improvement in a personalized setting.
Students can concentrate on supplemental exercises tailored to their specific instrument. These fundamentals are essential for future development and advancing playing skills.
Method books designed for specific instruments are more effective than band music for developing well-rounded musicians. Their systematic approach thoroughly covers range, key signatures, rhythms, duets, alternate fingerings, and styles, surpassing what the band curriculum offers.
Region/district band auditions can be personalized. Teachers can start with a student’s current level and create a tailored plan to prepare them for the audition, teaching them to set both long-term and weekly goals.
Private lesson teachers serve as role models, strongly motivating students to continue in band and excel individually. Despite changes in classes, grade levels, and schools, students might have the same lesson teacher for over seven years. These teachers typically have a long-term development plan, guiding students from their first notes in beginner band to performing professional-level solos in high school, knowing the steps to get them there.
