Students participated in a BreakoutEDU game, solving clues to help the Gingerbread Man escape the wolf! The clues involved various math problems and reading strategies, including sequence and comprehension. If the students all finished in the time limit, they were rewarded a prize by the Gingerbread Man! This exercise tested them with the 4C's, and all the students did very well!
Over a two session period, we tested balance by building a seesaw and force and motion by building a car with launcher. With the seesaw, the students needed to make both sides balance out. They were given various LEGO blocks to use, as well as different combinations, in order to balance it out. With the car, the students explored which surface the car traveled the furthest on between the carpet and the tile. They also explored launching the car with a short rod and a long rod, seeing what went farthest.
During this lesson, we read I Wanna Iguana and explored what an iguana needs to survive in the wild. Then, students research an animal of their choice on their own. Finally, the students brought that information back to class and built a habitat for that animal, including what it needed to survive and any other plants/animals that would be found in the habitat. Students could make a 2-D or 3-D model, but had to use recycled materials found in the classroom. The students had a lot of fun with this project!
In this Discovery Education lesson, students learned about what it takes for a plant to grow. Then, using that knowledge, they designed and built a container using recyclable materials that would allow for a bean plant to grow. Within a week of planting their seeds, many of the students did have a bean plant growing!
Students had to work in pairs to complete the task of building a bridge that could support a car without falling over. They were provided 10 craft sticks, 10 straws, and tape to complete the challenge.
