Gold Hill Elementary
The school library should be the heart of every school. It is a place where students and teachers can not only come to read, but also access a plethora of books, technology, and resources freely, safely, and in a comfortable, engaging environment. As a school librarian I will focus on promotion and advocacy of the school library as well as building a love for reading and learning amongst students. I will recognize the importance of strong media literacy skills and will encourage Students to become independent, lifelong learners of information through instruction, quality learning experiences, and collaborative activities. Perhaps most importantly, I will be committed to creating and maintaining a trusting, caring, creative, interactive, and orderly environment where teaching and learning are exciting and engaging and students are assisted as they develop skills.
My name is Michelle Swearingen, but most of the kids call me, "Mrs. S." I taught kindergarten and 1st grade for almost 10 years but recently decided I'd go back to school to get my Master's and teach K-5th in the library. I graduated with a Master's in Library and Information Science in 2019. This is my second year as a school librarian, as well as my second year at GHES. I have been married to my husband, a professor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, for 6 years. I have two boys (ages 11 and 13) and he has two girls (ages 17 and 20). We live in Rock Hill with all the kids, two dogs, two cats, two guinea pigs, and a bearded dragon named Fluffy. In whatever spare time I have, I enjoy reading (of course!) but I also love camping and hiking. I'm a bit of a nerd, I'm still in love with the 80's and 90's, enjoy cult classic and horror movies, and collect vintage toys.
At Gold Hill Elementary we:
connect by working together;
GHES Destiny - This is where you will find our card catalog. Search for books that our library offers!
Discus - South Carolina's Virtual Library is the “information place." Discus, which stands for Digital Information for South Carolina Users, provides free access to an electronic library that’s available 24/7.
Sora - The Sora app was designed around the modern student reading experience. It empowers students to discover and enjoy ebooks and audiobooks from their school, for both leisure and class-assigned reading.

GHES Virtual Makerspace - Students can use the virtual makerspace when they are on the computers in the library and they can also access it at home.
Epic! - Students can use our class code: gzg5698 to access Epic! in their classroom as well as at home.
Interactive Nonfiction eBooks for GHES - Students have full access to over 600 interactive nonfiction eBooks. The books are aligned to our curriculum standards and can be used for research or recreational reading. No login information is needed, just follow the link to our school's database!
