UNIFORMS & SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT
Students in Westwood Winds will be fitted for a uniform ($250) for performances. It will be stored at the school. They will also receive a leatherette music folder ($25) and original copies of music (up to $4 each). These can be expensive to replace. Please talk with your students about caring for these school-issued supplies and equipment.
FINANCIAL AWARDS
Our Music Parent's Association does offer some financial support to graduating Band and Choir students. There is an application form that will be available each spring for graduands to complete. The value varies each year. As well, there may be Division awards that the Director recommends students for.
The choral music program seeks to develop musical competency and strives for excellence within the limits of the student’s capabilities. The concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, form and expression provide the intellectual framework of the music program. Concepts are essentially taught through student participation in the skill areas of singing, playing, listening, reading (and writing) and creating.
With an emphasis on creating community and building confidence, singers in the choral program have multiple opportunities to perform, and to listen to great examples. We also take the time to work with professional clinicians and performers when available. Our classes focus on helping to develop skills in healthy vocal technique, performing, and theory.
This after school course will run all year long. High School students can earn up to 5 credits (125 hours of rehearsal and performance).
Attendance is MANDATORY. This is a class that they are enrolling in, not an extra-curricular. Students who miss rehearsals will not earn their credits.
This ensemble is open to students in grades 7-12, but only grades 10-11-12 can earn credits.
All choir classes have several components:
Glee - time is put aside each class to work on contemporary pop music. The Glee portion is optional but most students enjoy it.
Music Theory - students will learn the basics of how their voices work, how to interpret choral music, solfege, and how to read choral music and notation. Ear training and sight reading are a large focus.
Music History - students will explore the history of Western music through studying composers and repertoire from all time periods.
Solo and Small Performance - students will be given opportunities to perform solos and small group performances.
Large Ensemble Performance - together we will prepare repertoire for all major performances, exploring a variety of genres, tempos, time periods, and languages.
