Appropriate and rigorous course selection is a very important part of preparing to achieve life's goals. The Discovery Center website and the Student Planning Guide have been designed to assist students in creating the road map to their future.
The Student Planning Guide is a tool utilized by our School Counselors to assist you in the planning and record keeping of high school course selections, earned credits, and career goals, with the following message in mind: When seeking employment, technical training, a college degree, apprenticeship, or a job promotion, the high school transcript is usually requested. This is a very simple way of asking what courses were taken to prepare for the future. Although it is difficult for a student to know what courses to choose because the future is filled with uncertainties, the best policy to follow when making course selections is to take the courses that are challenging but within the student's capabilities. Students who take the easy way through high school may regret it later, because it could mean they will not be accepted into an institution of higher learning, not be able to begin the career they chose, or not receive a future job promotion.
Students are required to earn 28 credits to graduate from the Fort LeBoeuf High School. Each class, with the exception of Health 9 (.5 credit), Health 11 (.5 credit). Safety Education (.5 credit) and Senior English Research (.5 credit), is worth 1 credit. Students will earn a credit for each class with a final passing grade. If a student fails a core class (Math, English, Science or Social Studies) they will need to retake that class in order to earn that credit. The School Counselors will assist students throughout their class scheduling to ensure that each student meets their graduation requirements.
The Course Selection Handbook is updated every year to reflect the courses offered at the Fort LeBoeuf High School. Students are all provided a copy of this handbook when the scheduling process begins. It is intended to assist students and their parents when discussing which class options best fit their interests, abilities and future goals. It also outlines all graduation requirements, different program opportunities offered, information related to our grading scale, the Latin Grading Scale, course requirements and perquisites.
Along with the Course Selection Handbook, students are given a Course Selection Sheet that they will list the courses that they are requesting to take for the upcoming school year. This sheets lists the courses that are offered in the high school and lists the graduation requirements are listed on the back of the sheet. Once it is completed and turned in the School Counselors will meet with the students to review their course requests and how they will prepare them for their future goals.
