HELPFUL TIP: SOMETIMES CHIPS CAN MIGRATE. MAKE SURE TO SCAN THE ENTIRE BODY
Turn on the Scanner: Ensure the microchip scanner is powered on and functioning properly.
Test the Scanner: Once powered on, the device screen will display digital information. Press the main button, and if you see data appear, the device is functioning properly.
Keep the Dog Calm: Gently restrain the dog to keep them still. Having a second person to help can be beneficial.
Stand Beside the Dog: Position yourself next to the dog to maintain control and comfort.
Start at the Shoulder Blades: Begin scanning at the dog's shoulder blades, where microchips are commonly implanted.
Use an 'S' Pattern: Move the scanner slowly in an 'S' pattern from the shoulder blades down the back towards the tail.
Maintain Close Contact: Hold the scanner close to the dog's skin, slightly touching the fur to ensure accurate reading.
Scan the Sides: After the back, scan the sides of the dog, moving from the spine down to the belly on both sides.
Scan the Neck and Shoulders: Move the scanner around the neck and shoulder areas, as microchips can migrate over time.
Scan the Legs: Finally, scan down each leg, as chips can occasionally move to these areas.
Repeat Scanning: Perform multiple slow passes over each area to increase the chances of detecting a microchip.
Listen for Beeps: Most scanners emit a beep when a microchip is detected.
Read the Display: The scanner will display the microchip number if one is found.
Record the Microchip Number: Write down the complete microchip number accurately or use your mobile device to take a picture of the numbers on screen.
Check Registration: Use the microchip number to look up the owner's contact information through a microchip registry database. (On next page of this guide)
