MLK Jr. Day
Make a ritual of lighting your chalice at home each week.
How do Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words help inspire you to live with intention?
Change Sings! Try this at Home!
Listen to the story, Change Sings! by Amanda Gorman.
Point out the cover of the book in the beginning of the video.
Look at the mosaic in the background. A mosaic is a picture made up of little pieces. While we are listening to the story, think about why a mosaic is a good image for the big idea in this poem. Pay attention to things the characters are doing to make change happen for a better world.
Discuss:
Did you notice that each of the children has a different instrument? What instrument are you most like? Why? Maybe you're like the sound, its place in the band, or its shape. What do you have in common with the musical instrument?
What are some things the characters are doing to make change happen for a better world? What do you think will make a better world? Are there things that you can do to make the world better?
Remember I asked you to think about why a mosaic is a good image for the big idea in this poem. What do you think?
Take a few minutes to draw a mosaic. Draw shapes with a pen or marker. In some of the spaces you create, write or draw something you can do to change the world, things you are good at that could be used to help others, things you think will make a better world. Then use different colors to fill in the shapes.
