What Is Volkssporting?

Volkssporting started in Germany. Simpy defined, it is a personal fitness sports and recreation program offer non-competitive walks, hikes, bike rides, swims and - in some regions - cross-country skiing. For scheduled events,  participants choose their own start times (within a given "window") and proceed at their own pace. Walking - also called "volksmarching" - is the most popular of all the volkssporting activities.

Volkssporting in the United States is sponsored by the American Volkssports Association (AVA). The AVA was founded in 1976, and is an educational 501(c)(3) (nonprofit) organization dedicated to promoting fun, fitness and friendship.  The AVA has a nationwide, grassroots network of about 300 active clubs, which collectively offer more than 3,000 volkssporting events each year.
