In this unit, students will start by embarking on a research project about the events leading up to the American Revolution. As their knowledge of the time period grows, they will then participate in a debate questioning our independence from Great Britain, gathering and angling evidence to support their side and reenact the Second Continental Congress.

In this unit, students will be taught to read Historical Fiction. Through Book Clubs, students will practice reading analytically, synthesizing complicated narratives, comparing and contrasting themes, and incorporating nonfiction research into their reading

UNIT 3: Details and Synthesis
In this unit, children will work in book clubs to build on the work they have done previously around characters. Children learn to read closely and pay attention to details in a book that teach us more about characters. They will track these ideas across a text to see how they change and grow. They will then read closely to find deeper meaning in their books, the theme and track that across a book. Towards the end of the unit, children will learn how to compare and contrast characters and themes across books. As children work, they are required to support their ideas with evidence.
