WISE-EU

Karavasta, Butrint, Prespa, Narta. Albania’s wetlands are among the richest ecosystems in the Mediterranean, and among the most exposed. Unplanned tourism, untreated wastewater and new infrastructure keep pushing them towards a point of no return. WISE-EU starts from a plain question: how do we manage these places to EU standards before the damage becomes permanent?

WISE-EU is a three-year Jean Monnet Module, selected for Erasmus+ funding in August 2025 under the call ERASMUS-JMO-2025-MODULE and run by the Faculty of History and Philology, University of Tirana. The Teaching staff are Professors and Doctors of Sciences from different disciplines, such as: geography, geoinformatics, law, economics, sociology and chemistry, across three Albanian universities and invited from state agencies and NGOs.

Lectures, seminars, field visits, trainings and summer schools are open to Master and PhD students, researchers, protected-area staff, local and central government officers, NGOs and people who live next to a wetland. Everything is free and ends with a certificate. Over three years the team will also publish two scientific articles and a policy paper on the wise use of Albanian wetlands.
