STEAM Summer Learning Course Descriptions
Edmentum (Credit Recovery):
Edmentum is a computer based program that allows students to experience multiple classes of the student's choosing and/or that are designed particularly to the student’s graduation and credit needs. Edmentum is utilized for students recovering credit from a class that was taken during the school year where credit was not previously satisfied. A teacher works with the student to complete various learning platforms and assessments for mastery. A student can be enrolled in multiple classes in the edmentum program.
Personal Finance:
Personal Finance
Students are informed of their various financial responsibilities, and provides opportunities for self-awareness, expression, and satisfaction in a highly technical and competitive society. Students discover new ways to maximize their earning potential, develop strategies for managing their resources, explore skills for the wise use of credit, and gain insight into the different ways of managing money such as wages, savings, and investments. Budgeting and expense sources such as food, clothing, shelter, insurance, and taxes will be examined. Income tax forms will be completed.
Language Arts:
9th Grade Advanced Literature and Composition
Students will read a variety of short stories, novels, poetry, plays, and nonfiction. Students will learn and practice essential communication skills such as oral presentation, composition, library research, grammar usage and mechanics, study skills, and note taking. Students will study a variety of literary forms, genres, and devices. Writing and reading levels will be extended beyond what is required in 8th grade Literature and Composition.
10th Literature and Composition
Students will read, analyze, and respond orally and in writing to a variety of literature selections and related works of nonfiction. Students will write a variety of essays using writing techniques such as comparison/contrast, persuasion, opinion, and literary analysis. Students will also conduct research, write a research paper and give an oral report and/or exhibition based on that research. Students will improve their vocabulary (including literary terms), continue the study of grammar usage and mechanics, and improve and practice their research skills. Writing and reading levels will be extended beyond what is required in 10th grade Literature and Composition.
Mathematics
Math Skills Clinic
This course is designed to assist students in strengthening their mathematics skills. Principles of Algebra and Geometry will be covered as a review to help students advance their mastery of mathematics standards as well as work on critical thinking mathematics progression curriculum.
Algebra I Bootcamp
Algebra I Bootcamp is a designated course for any student coming into STEAM High that is enrolled in Algebra I in the Fall. In this course, students will further develop their algebra skills and algebraic understanding of mathematics. Standards mastery will be a key component oif the course as this well lay the foundation for success in Algebra I.
Algebra II
This course consists of more advanced topics than those in Algebra I. Topics include real number axioms, absolute value, equations and inequalities, linear equations and inequalities, relations and function, conic sections, rational exponents, radicals, system of equations and related application problems. A TI-83/84 or TI-89 graphing calculator is needed for this course.
ACT Prep
Students will work on the skills necessary to have a successful experience as they prepare for the ACT. Mastery of mathematics skills as well as some language arts prep will allow for scholars to gain experience and test taking strategies as they maneuver through ACT mastery.
AP Bootcamp:
This course is designed to prepare students for the reading, writing, critical thinking, and rigor associated with advanced placement courses. Students will develop and analyze the critical thinking skills necessary for success in advanced placement courses as well as develop the skill sets to navigate advanced texts and Socratic seminars. Students use primary sources, read extensively, and learn to write persuasive essays as part of the analysis skill development process.
Visual Arts Clinic
Students will have the opportunity to complete a semester long art course of their choosing and work as part of a standard's based skills clinic developing their artistic techniques and skills. This is a hands on course where students will be able to work on the principles of art and various art forms, drawing, and painting. Students will work to complete projects that can be displayed as well as school murals.
9th Grade Transition
Incoming 9th grade students will have the opportunity to take part in a 2 week transitional course as they enter into their STEAM High career. Students will have the opportunity to experience hands on learning, critical thinking and Socratic seminar skill development, and deep levels of reading and writing analysis as well as team building activities. STEAM High has an innovative approach to 21st century learning and college readiness-this class is an excellent way to hone those skill sets before school starts as well as become part of the STEAM HIGH learning family.
