KYLE KMIECIK '00
VARSITY HEAD COACH
Coach Kmiecik, Fenwick Class of 2000, has been a cornerstone of the Fenwick Baseball program for more than a decade, bringing 13 years of coaching experience, a deep passion for the game, and a lifelong connection to the Friar community. Over the course of his tenure, he has served in several important roles: 9 years as a Varsity Assistant, 1 year as Interim Head Coach, and the past 3 seasons as Head Coach. Beyond the baseball field, Coach Kmiecik serves Fenwick full-time as a Learning Resource Coordinator, working closely with Coach Segredo to support the academic and personal growth of students.
As a Head Coach, he has guided the Friars to two sectional championships and has helped prepare more than 20 student-athletes to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level. His leadership has been recognized not only within athletics but also in the classroom, as evidenced by his receipt of the Outstanding Educator Award from the University of Chicago in 2024, an honor reflecting his dedication to mentorship, teaching, and shaping the lives of young people.
A proud alum, Coach Kmiecik’s ties to Fenwick run deep. As a student-athlete, he competed for four years on the baseball team, earning a starting spot on varsity for two seasons as a shortstop, second baseman, and pitcher. His high school career was highlighted by a memorable walk-off home run to beat OPRF in the regional final his junior year. He went on to earn All-State, All-Conference, and All-Area honors in baseball, while also excelling as a two-sport athlete, helping lead Fenwick Soccer to the Super sectional round, finishing in the top eight of all the teams in the state of Illinois.
After graduation, he continued his academic and athletic journey at Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina, where he played four years of collegiate baseball as a third baseman and second baseman. He was recognized with the program’s Top Newcomer Award as a freshman, earned All-Conference honors, and was selected to compete in the summer collegiate wood bat league (SCBL) All-Star game. Following college, Coach Kmiecik pursued professional baseball, competing in independent leagues across the country with the Sioux Falls Canaries, Kalamazoo Kings, and Sussex Skyhawks. His professional career included a Frontier League All-Star selection and the opportunity to play for and learn under accomplished managers such as Hal Lanier (1986 NL Manager of the Year with the Houston Astros), Fran Riordan (current AAA manager of the Las Vegas Aviators), and Mike Pinto (current Joliet Slammers manager).
Transitioning into coaching, Coach Kmiecik gained valuable experience at the collegiate level, serving as the Hitting and Infield Coach at Robert Morris University and Dominican University. These roles honed his technical knowledge of the game and deepened his commitment to developing players both fundamentally and mentally. Ultimately, the pull of home brought him back to Fenwick, where he has devoted his career to building a program grounded in tradition, respect, and excellence.
Coaching Philosophy
For Coach Kmiecik, baseball is more than just a sport, it is a tool for shaping character and preparing young men for life beyond the field. His philosophy centers on four program pillars: Respect, Accountability, Tradition, and Excellence. Under his leadership, Friar Baseball demands hustle, discipline, and selflessness, emphasizing that success is earned through preparation, effort, and a team-first mentality.
He views coaching as a calling and a daily opportunity to model faith, respect, and hard work. His goal is not only to develop skilled athletes, but also to shape resilient, responsible, and humble individuals who carry the lessons of teamwork, perseverance, and gratitude into their future endeavors. By creating an environment of trust and communication, he ensures that players know they are valued as both athletes and people.
Coach Kmiecik often reminds his players that failure is a teacher, not an obstacle. He challenges them to push beyond their comfort zones, to embrace adversity as a pathway to growth, and to focus on controlling what they can in every situation. Through this approach, he seeks to instill lifelong lessons of discipline, gratitude, and service to others.
“Once a Friar, always a Friar” is more than just a phrase for Coach Kmiecik; it is the guiding principle of his work with the program. He is quick to credit the dedicated coaching staff around him for Fenwick’s success, acknowledging their tireless efforts both on the field and in the classroom. Together, they form a team committed to honoring the rich history of Fenwick Baseball while preparing the next generation of Friars to carry its legacy forward with humility, passion, and respect.

At Fenwick, he began as a freshman Assistant Coach for 2 years and was later promoted to Head Coach of the Freshman program, where he made history by leading his squad to the basketball program's first-ever 30-0 season in his first year at the helm. In his second year, combining both A and B team results, his teams again reached 30+ wins before committing to the baseball program full-time.
Beyond coaching, Coach Segredo also serves as the voice of Fenwick Football and Boys’ Basketball, entering his 4th year, becoming a familiar and trusted presence within the Friar community.
Coaching Philosophy
Coach Segredo's philosophy centers on developing the whole athlete, mentally, physically, and emotionally. His true priority is teaching skills, discipline, and resilience that extend far beyond the playing field. He believes that success is measured not only by championships but by the growth of each individual player.
“I coach to win,” he says, “but never at the expense of integrity or respect. I expect players to give maximum effort, compete with passion, and uphold the values of sportsmanship. We strive to outwork, outthink, and outperform our opponents, while always respecting the game and those who play it. Mistakes are learning opportunities. I encourage players to approach challenges with perseverance and a positive attitude. My role as a coach is to provide guidance, structure, and encouragement, while pushing athletes to reach their full potential through hard work and continuous improvement.”
