Self-learning protein purification Hands-on course.
Biochemistry Department. Facultad de Medicina. Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
(July 4th-14 th, 2022)
Aims:
The course content gives a background in protein structure/chemistry, purification principles, protocol development, optimization strategies, use and programming of an automated chromatography instrument.
Why should I enroll in this course?
In recent years, purified proteins have more and more frequently been used for diagnostic and therapeutic applications to develop new drugs for treatment (i.i: antibodies such as anti -TNF or peptides like insulin). Also, an integral and important component of the life science industry and research is the use of protein engineering techniques to design or modify proteins. The protein purification industry holds a wide range of research opportunities, industrial jobs and varied tracks for career advancement. It is extremely important to obtain skills to apply advanced methods to purify and characterize proteins, which is a basic requirement for getting a job in most life science companies.
A deep characterization of proteins in biological mixtures is difficult due to the most of the times low abundance of the targeted protein in these mixtures, and the presence of different biological ligands that preclude a fine characterization. Hence, protein purification is a fundamental step for analyzing individual proteins and protein complexes and identifying interactions with other proteins and ligands.
Knowledge about the protein purification techniques and characterization of their propertiesare an integral part of preparing oneself for climbing the career ladder.
Who must attend:
Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biomedicine and related topics
Students in their B. Sc / B. Tech / M. Sc / M. Tech / Ph. D
