LIBRARY CARDS: All SES students may get a library card from the Franklin County Public Library. A form was included in your registration packet at the beginning of the year. If your child already has a card or would like a card, please email Mrs. Bruce at kathryn.bruce@fcstn.net
BOOKFAIR: The next bookfair will be October 20-24, 2025! Every dollar contributes to funds earned through the fair. With the average price of books being $15 for hardbound and $24 for graphic novels, this money will go a long way to purchase books, book sets, and necessary supplies to keep the library current, diverse, and supporting the curriculum needs of our students. Thank you!
LESSONS: In the library, we are learning to read and reading to learn. Students have worked with fiction books, identified the titles and authors and where they are found on the shelves. Our 3rd graders are studying story structure of classic tales, like The Velveteen Rabbit. Our 4th graders have been researching Japan in preparation for the Peace Pole on Sept. 19. The 5th graders are beginning their research into the history of SES in anticipation of the 100th birthday of the school. the power of words--vocabulary, coding, and online behavior. Our 2nd graders are learning about narrative structure and tall tales. Our 1st graders are using their growing reading skills to work through centers in the library. And our Kindergarten students are learning about how to care for library books and how to carefully explore the library.
SUMMER SUPER READERS!
Twenty-seven students participated in the Summer 2025 Reading BINGO challenge! These students were recognized at the first Friday Assembly. Participants received a sketch bookmark and eraser. Those who completed all 25 squares received a certificate AND a book from the library. PLUS, those students have their name put into a drawing for a gift certificate to the Barnes and Noble bookstore and to the fall Scholastic Book Fair. Winners of the gift certificate walked to the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Sewanee and browsed the shelves for titles they really liked.
So proud of these readers!
Here are some resources that can help you be a partner teacher as your child learns to read.
Before a child can read, he/she needs to be able to first hear distinct sounds in words and then learn the sounds that go with each letter of the alphabet. For example, identifying rhyming sounds happens before your child actually reads.
