Intervention Information

Helping Your struggling student

Sewanee Elementary school teachers know how to meet the educational differences of their students in the classroom. And they know there are times when a student will benefit from additional explicit instruction and support. Every student benefits from our daily Tiger Time.

Tiger Time: a 45-minute period of time each day during which students work with a teacher, educational assistant, or educational program to best meet their learning needs

Intervention: specific action taken by the teacher to ensure the student gets the foundational support needed to understand the lesson in the classroom

Educational Assistant: a trained aide who works with students in a small group setting using high-quality materials and strategies to address the educational needs of the student

Screening: all students take a reading and a math screening assessment 3 times a year. this is a grade-level assessment that gives the teacher insight into how well the student can read or do grade-level math as compared to other students across the nation. The results help the teacher better identify the areas the student needs to strengthen.

National Norm: students across the nation take the same assessments and educational experts identify what is the "norm" for each grade. Students who score above the 25th percentile are considered "normal". Students who score below the 10th percentile need intensive intervention to help close gaps in understanding. Students who score between the 11th and 25th percentile need additional support to help close gaps in understanding.

Dyslexic tendencies: Per state law, all teachers must review students' reading scores on the reading screener to determine if the student is showing signs associated with dyslexia. If the student is showing such signs, then specialized intervention and support are provided to the student.
