Getting involved with The Voice can be incredibly fun and rewarding, and is open to all Millbrook students. We are always looking for more talented writers, artists, photographers, filmmakers and musicians to share their work with us. All students who are interested in submitting their original work to The Voice should first review the submission guidelines here, to get a more complete idea of what we look for.
Students should pay attention to the announcements to learn information about the submission period opening, deadline, and magazine theme. While we don't require submissions to adhere to the theme, we recommend using the theme to guide your creative process. The QR code to the submission form will be made available on the announcements and by asking your English teacher.
Writers
The Voice magazine accepts many different kinds of creative writing, including: creative short stories, creative nonfiction, poetry, essays, and scripts. Writing submissions will be accepted as Google documents with a maximum of 1500 words. We want to feature as much writing in the magazine as possible, so keep it short and sweet!
To prepare for submission, we recommend carefully reviewing and editing your writing to make your submission the best it can be! Need help with your submission? The Pioneer Writing Center has writing coaches available who would love to help. Your English teachers can also help you proofread and improve your submission piece. Additionally, the Creative Writing Club is a great place to receive assistance. They have craft meetings on the first Friday of each month, where you can learn a new technique, and writing workshops on the second Friday of each month, where writers can share work with their peers and get feedback. The Creative Writing Club also makes several decisions regarding The Voice, including theme selection and voting on writing submissions, so joining the club can be a great way to get involved.
Artists and Photographers
The Voice magazine accepts both digital and traditional artworks, across several different mediums including: ink, pencil, charcoal, acrylic, oil, pastels, collage, digital art, and more. We also accept photography submissions, both digital and traditionally developed. We would love to feature your art or photos in our magazine! Art pieces and traditional photographs should be submitted as high quality photos of the original piece. If you need help digitizing your art piece, visit Ms. Hoelen in Room 449/450.
For assistance with your art submission, we recommend attending Millbrook Artist Collective meetings, where artistic peers and teachers will be able to offer advice. Additionally, enrolling in Millbrook's art electives can help you develop your skills as an artist and increase the likelihood of your submission being selected.
For assistance with photography submissions, we recommend attending Multi-Digital Media Club meetings. This club covers a wide range of subjects including photography, and is a good place to find like-minded peers who can help you with your submission. Additionally, Millbrook's Photography elective (Imaging Technology) is a great way for students to learn about photography and gain experience with professional equipment and many different types of photoshoots.
Film or Music
Film, podcast, or music submissions will be presented in The Voice with a QR code. We may also choose to present still images or dialogue from films, quotes from podcasts, lyrics from songs, or excerpts from sheet music. Your film or music piece should be submitted using a Google Drive video or audio file attached to the submission form.
For assistance with music submissions, the music, chorus and band teachers are a great resource to help. For podcasts and film, Graphic Productions Class and the Technology Student Association and Multi-Digital Media Clubs covers these topics and more, and is a great place to find like-minded peers who are willing to help.
Design
Do you want to lend your graphic design skills to the Voice magazine? Consider enrolling in Communications Systems, Millbrook’s Introduction to Graphic Design class! They complete many exciting projects, including designing the page layouts featured in The Voice magazine. For more information, please contact Ms. Hoelen in rooms 449/450.
