Basics
Important information for both interns and mentors
When will the internship begin?
TAM interns will begin their internships on the third day of school and they will end their internship at the beginning of January. Interns are expected to send mentors an email introducing themselves before their internship begins to establish initial communication and introductions. All emails between the mentor and the intern must include a cc to Professor Huguley (Sally.Huguley@fcps.org).
Example of required email components:
Professor Huguley should be CC'd in the email: Sally.Huguley@fcps.org (spelled correctly)
There should be a clear topic in the subject line ("Question about Lesson Plan")
Proper greeting (Good Morning, Ms. Watkins,)... not ("Hey"...)
Correct grammar and spelling is used and tone of the message is taken into account
It should be easy to read and concise
Proper closure (Sincerely, Regards, Thank you,)… not ("Thx", "Bye"...)
What has been assigned to your student-teacher?
When the TAM student-teachers are sent out to their internships, they are given a few standing assignments from the Site Coordinator along with the list of tasks they should complete with mentors . The intern should take the INITIATIVE to complete assignments/tasks and get involved quickly in the daily routine/responsibilities of the classroom.
Typical standing assignments required of the interns include the following:
"Get to Know Me" slideshow
Weekly Internship Log (must be signed by the mentor)
Observation Sheet of Teaching Techniques
Wait Time/Questioning Techniques
Totally Positive Observation Notes
Student Case Study project and essay
Stakeholder Interview essay
8 artifact/analysis entries for the portfolio and the overall completion of the portfolio
Teaching a minimum of 4 "whole group" lessons over the course of their internship
Basic Intern Expectations
Interns should be seen as a valuable and reliable asset within their mentor's classroom. Polished professionalism is expected. This includes appropriate attire, dependable attendance, and effective, timely communication. Interns should maintain a professional image, which means putting forward the best version of themselves. Interns should take the initiative to insert themselves into the classroom environment, stay on top of their assignments/responsibilities, and assist their students as needed. Interns must maintain reliable attendance, and email communication regarding absences and schedule adjustments must be timely and include both the mentor teacher and Site Coordinator.
