The outdoor staff leads students on a 2 day tour of many interesting geological and historical sites of Frederick County ranging from a local limestone kiln and quarry at Fountain Rock to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. The focus is on interactions on the Earth as well as modern and historical uses of our natural resources. Students collect 12 different rock and mineral samples to make their own Frederick County Rock and Mineral Collection. Students learn how each sample was formed and how they relate to four spheres of the Earth: atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere. Students will use this experience to continue to answer their driving question: What can we do as individuals and communities to protect the Earth’s resources and environment?
