The Catoctin High School Newsletter • September 6, 2024
Student safety is an important priority and we need the cooperation of everyone who enters our campus to ensure that, especially in our parking lots. Please take note of and adhere to the following guidelines - they are for the safety of all:
During arrival, the front bus loop is for buses only. All student drop-offs should take place in the upper lot (near the baseball field).
During dismissal, car riders should also be picked up in the upper lot.
The lot directly in front of the building is for staff daily parking only (visitors who will only be in the building for a short time between 7:30 am and 2:20 pm may use this lot for short-term parking).
Student walkers should take great care when crossing the parking lot and roads; use the crosswalks and cross Sabillasville Road at the crossing guard. Please do not walk out in front of vehicles and pay attention to the traffic around you.
All drivers (student and adult) are asked to exhibit caution and to drive slowly and alertly at all times. All vehicle drivers and passengers are reminded to wear their seat belts.
Student drivers parking on school property are required to purchase a parking permit from the main office
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring our students’ safety on the campus of Catoctin High School.
Breakfast and lunch is served daily for Catoctin High School students. You may add funds to your student's meals account using Linq Connect.

FCPS has established expectations system-wide regarding the use of cell phones in school. Our policy has not changed as our current practices align well with the FCPS expectations.
When we met with students last week, we shared the following reminders:
Your learning is too important to be interrupted by electronic distractions!
Phones may be used between classes, at lunch, and before and after school.
During instructional time, cell phones should be silenced and out of sight.
If phones are out, students will be required to report to the office to turn in the phone.
Please help us enforce these expectations by talking to your child about the use of his/her cell phone at school. Please also try not to contact your child via text and/or call during the school day (except in cases of an emergency).
Thank you for your partnership in our efforts to support students’ responsible management of their devices and the removal of this distraction during instructional times.
Catoctin High School is excited to partner with family and community members who are interested in joining efforts to support our students and school with their time and talents by way of volunteering. If you’re interested in volunteering in the upcoming school year, please review the information at this page to get started: Volunteer Information

Dear Catoctin Community,
With more than two weeks of school in the books, I am excited to share a good report thus far. Our staff has engaged students in learning and making connections, our students have stepped up to meet academic and behavioral expectations, and our community has shown great support for our school (with an awesome turn out for Back-to-School Night as evidence of that!)
Over the first few days of school, we met with the students (by grade level classes) - we shared our expectations, priorities, and opportunities for support with them. The groups were all attentive and I am hopeful that they will keep this information in the back of their minds as we progress through the year. Included here are the slides of information if you wish to review and discuss with your child(ren). The most important message I hope the students left with is that we prioritize both their safety and education every day and that they each have an important role in their individual success and in the positive environment in our school community.
I have also included below links to information that was shared just before school started. If you are like me, those days were a whirlwind and it was hard to find time to focus on all the details. If you did not already have a chance to review this information, I encourage you to do so as it will help set the context for our work this year.
The slides that we presented during the FAQ session (for those who were unable to join us and a reminder for those who were here but want to reference the information again).
A slideshow with some helpful information and guidance for students and parents as we begin the school year.
I shared in my last letter my excitement for this year - our awesome start has only fueled that positive feeling. I hope you and your child(ren) feel the same way; but if you have had struggles (or do in the future), please do not hesitate to reach out - we are here to help!
Go Cougars!
Sincerely,
Jen Clements
Principal
Noted below are the reasons for which absences could be excused; if a student MUST miss school due to one of the following reasons, please be sure to submit a written note in advance or upon his/her return.
01 Death in the immediate family
02 Illness of the child - The principal may require a physician's certificate from the parent or guardian of a child continuously absent for illness.
04 Court summons
07 Hazardous weather conditions
08 Work/activity approved by the school
09 Observance of religious holiday(3 per year)
10 State emergency
13 Other emergency
17 Health Exclusion
18 Suspension
19 Lack of authorized transportation
Other excused absences that require principal approval:
03 Doctor’s note – After 10 absences, for any reason, schools may require documentation from a doctor or other medical professional.
14 Illness in family
15 Hardship - Lack of housing, clothing, or other personal items, or any other barrier that impacts attendance. This also includes situations related to McKinney-Vento.
16 Vacation – Students who take trips with approval of their parent/guardian may be excused for a maximum of 5 days, per school year, with prior written notice to the principal or designee.
23 College Visits – Visits by students to prospective colleges are excused up to 4 days per year for students who provide the principal or designee with prior written notice.
We appreciate your support in establishing positive attendance habits at home and reinforcing the importance of coming to school on time each day.
Attendance has been and will continue to be an area of focus for our feeder schools. We can’t support your child’s success if they are not in school; being at school each day opens opportunities for our students. Below is the chronic absenteeism* rate for each school for the past two school years (note - the lower the rate, the better the attendance). We are excited by the improvement and look forward to building on this growth to even further increase our attendance rates.
*Chronic absenteeism: A student is defined as chronically absent if he/she misses 10% or more of the school days.
As part of our ongoing commitment to support the mental health and well-being of our students, Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is excited to announce the launch of Basecamp. Developed in partnership with Greenspace Health and funded by the Maryland Consortium on Coordinated Community Supports, Basecamp is a comprehensive mental wellness hub designed to provide students with immediate access to a wide range of mental health resources and services.
What is Basecamp?
Basecamp is an online wellness platform that makes it easy for students to find the help and support they need, ensuring they have immediate access to resources and services to support their mental health. By utilizing Basecamp, students can better understand their emotions, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and access supportive mental health services and resources. With Basecamp, students will have access to:
Educational Content: Access to articles and videos on various mental health topics relevant to students.
Self-Guided Resources: Tools and activities that students can use independently to maintain or improve their mental health.
Bi-Weekly Surveys: Short surveys to help students check in on their mental health, understand their feelings over time, and identify factors impacting their well-being.
Resource Recommendations: Personalized suggestions based on each student’s current challenges.
Direct Access to Services: Information and connections to mental health resources available within Frederick County.
How Can My Child Access Basecamp?
Basecamp is easily accessible to all middle and high school students at basecampfcps.com. Additionally, we have placed posters around the school with the URL and a QR code for quick access via mobile devices. For elementary school students, the platform is intended to be accessed by parents/caregivers to help them support their child’s mental health.
Your Role as Parents and Caregivers
We encourage you to discuss Basecamp with your child and explore the platform together. Your support and involvement will help your child feel supported and access the most appropriate resource or service for their needs. This document has more information about Basecamp and how you can share it with your child.
For more information or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at lynn.davis@fcps.org.

Catoctin High School Sports Boosters is a parent-based organization which provides support for all CHS athletes, sports teams and coaches. The Sports Boosters program is needed to cover the additional expenses not covered by the very limited Athletic Department budget. We raise money through fund raisers, concession sales, sponsorship and membership.
All of the money raised goes to support our athletic programs. With continued cuts to the Athletic Department's budget the burden falls on the Sports Boosters and the individual sports programs to come up with the needed funding to run successful programs. In addition, Catoctin is a 1-A school with a limited number of student-athletes and spectators which is how budgets are determined, because of this we are already at a disadvantage compared to the larger schools in Frederick County.
Please consider becoming a Catoctin High School Sports Booster Member. Help Catoctin Athletes by signing up now. Anyone can join. For more information: Sports Boosters
