All seniors must return their school-issued chromebooks, charger, and case to Mrs. Felmet or Mrs. Engelstatter no later than the first graduation practice on Monday, May 23. If these items are not returned by May 23, the item will become a financial obligation and graduation tickets will be held until the items or returned or payment is made.
Your immunization record is an important health document that you will need in the future. You may need a copy to provide to employers, colleges, or universities.
The school has provided you with a copy of your immunization record for your convenience. Please keep it in a safe place with your other important documents. School health records are only kept until age 21 and copies of the records will not be available after that time.
We encourage you to access the websites below for more information and to contact your health care provider regularly to keep your immunizations up to date.
Congratulations to Catoctin High senior Tanner Seiss who was recently given the prestigious honor of being named a Carson Scholar.
The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Scholarship winners receive the honor of being named “Carson Scholars” and are awarded an Olympic-sized medal and a trophy for their school to celebrate their accomplishments.
Students must attend an accredited K-12 school in the United States. An interested student must be nominated by an educator at his or her school to be able to compete for a Carson Scholarship. Only one student from each school is able to apply, ensuring that each nominee epitomizes academic excellence. Carson Scholars must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic achievement and humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion.

Please check out the resources below including a Family Resource Kit in both English and Spanish that provides information about mental health and services in MD, a tip sheet for helping youth with upsetting events, and a virtual calming room.
A special thank you to the Thurmont Ambulance Company which helped make the CHS Prom a huge success this year! The company donated the event rental fee and provided food and refreshments for the students who attended this year's Rustic Gala prom on Friday, April 29, 2022. Dear Cougar Community,
We are quickly approaching the end of the school year - only 26 days of school for underclassmen and 13 days for Seniors as of May 2. There is still a lot of important learning to be done yet this year and there are many traditional and fun events to take place.
It is as integral now as at any time of the year that students stay engaged and committed to their learning and their school work. Please continue to encourage good attendance (we can’t teach and support students who are not present) and dedication to their work (we can’t assign a grade for work that is not completed).
This is also a good time for us to talk to our students about staying safe and making good choices. There are a lot of fun events happening and we want students to be eligible to participate and to stay safe.
We are excited to return to a traditional graduation celebration at Mount St. Mary’s Arena this year. Please take note of all of the details for the family and friends of our Seniors that were recently shared. We reminded the Seniors when we met recently that participation in the graduation ceremony is a privilege that we want to afford to every Senior; please continue to encourage and support their positive decision-making so that they can be eligible to participate in this beautiful ceremony.
The Prom was held this past Friday – it was wonderful to be able to host this event for the first time in three years. Prom was held at the Thurmont Ambulance Company Event Complex – it was a beautiful venue afforded to us by the most generous Thurmont Ambulance Company – they donated the space and the food for our students. They are truly committed to our school and our community and we are grateful for their support.
Prom and Graduation involve our upperclassmen; however, the message of good decision-making is always an important one for all of our students. We partner with you every day to encourage our students (your children) to be good to themselves and others – physically, emotionally, socially, academically. Our collective voice is a powerful and positive influence in their lives and we appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this every day.
Another important event this week is the celebration of Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week. We are doing some special things to celebrate our amazingly committed staff; I would also encourage parents/guardians and students to give a small token of your appreciation – a note, email or Schoology message expressing your gratitude would be the greatest gift you could offer to the CHS staff members who are so dedicated to fostering your growth and learning.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any CHS staff member if there is any way in which we can support you and your child(ren).

As we are coming into the Spring and the weather becomes warmer, please take a moment with your family to review the FCPS dress code policy:
FCPS is committed to providing a safe, productive, and positive educational environment, one which reinforces the mission of the school system while respecting students' First Amendment rights. FCPS provides the following standards for dress recognizing school administrators may impose additional standards specific to the needs of their individual schools, provided such standards balance the students' First Amendment rights with the school's need to maintain a safe and orderly school environment, and consideration is given to input from the school community. Such standards are to be consistently and fairly applied to all students regardless of gender.
Students are restricted from wearing clothing that is unduly revealing (e.g. cut low at the neck or under the arms, exposes bare midriff, pants worn below the hips exposing the student's underwear or skin).
Students are prohibited from wearing clothing or items that promote illegal or violent conduct such as unlawful use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or weapons.
Students are prohibited from wearing clothing or items that are obscene, libelous or feature sexually offensive or vulgar words, pictures, phrases, drawings, etc.
Students are prohibited from wearing clothing or items containing derogatory expressions or language demeaning an identifiable person or group such as based on a person's race, color, gender, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability that could disrupt or materially interfere with school activities.
Students are prohibited from wearing specific gang-related attire.
Students may be restricted from wearing clothing that may conceal weapons or other illegal items such as drugs (outerwear jackets, etc.), and items that may be used as weapons (metal belts, chains attached to wallets/keys, etc.). Students may be asked to keep such items in their assigned locker during the school day.
Students are prohibited from wearing head gear (unless an exception is provided as outlined under #13 below).*
State regulations require the wearing of shoes in public places at all times.
Students are expected to follow all school rules governing safety in specialized programs that may require the wearing of protective clothing, safety glasses, proper foot protection, or other similar requirements
Unless excused by an identified exemption, students are required to follow rules imposed as they relate to face masks/face coverings.
Students may be restricted from wearing an item of clothing or article which impedes their ability to be fully engaged and participate in instruction.
Discipline - Students may be disciplined in accordance with FCPS Regulation 400-08 for dress code infractions, but should first be provided options to resolve the dress code concern particularly with first-time offenses. As outlined in FCPS Regulation 400-08, prior to imposing discipline, positive behavioral interventions and supports should be considered when practicable.
Exceptions to the Above Standards: School administrators shall grant exceptions to the dress code based on disability, health reasons or for sincerely held religious beliefs unless deemed a safety concern. Exceptions may also be made for spirit week celebrations or for extracurricular and athletic related purposes, as approved by the school administrator.

*CHS is allowing students to wear headgear (hats, hoods) at school. Individual teachers will set the rules within their classrooms and may require students to remove any/all headgear (all the time or during certain situations).
All seniors must complete a mandatory Senior Survey in Naviance by May 13. If not completed by graduation practice, seniors will be held after practice to complete. Please follow the below instructions:

Thinking of teaching science or math as a career? This summer course opportunity will allow students to explore teaching as a career, and plan/teach an inquiry-based science or mathematics lesson.
Explore STEM teaching and learning; classroom complexity; and develop teaching skills through self-paced modules, discussion boards, and virtual instruction. Participants will explore/understand the fundamentals of inquiry teaching, observe, plan and teach a student-centered STEM lesson.

Catoctin High School offers an after school tutoring program with teachers and staff from our school. Choose to drop in for face-to-face sessions after school in the Media Center or drop in to virtual Google Meet sessions in the evenings.
The after school face-to-face sessions are held 2:30 to 3:30 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, whenever school is in session. At this time, transportation for after school tutoring is not be available.
