Ask the Food Services Manager
Question: I am a lifelong vegetarian and I had some questions regarding the vegetarian food at the schools. I do not like the taste and texture of replacement meats, and I am also aware of how processed the fake meats are. I was wondering if it was possible to have better foods as a vegetarian option. For example, you could use beans, tofu, legumes, or other vegetables instead of fake meats. I hope you consider these options for the sake of the many vegetarians I know in this school.
Answer: Thank you for reaching out and sharing your thoughts on the vegetarian options available. I completely understand your concerns regarding the taste, texture, and processed nature of replacement meats. I appreciate your suggestion to incorporate more natural vegetarian options like beans, tofu, legumes, and vegetables.
We are always seeking ways to improve our menus and meet the diverse needs of our students. If you could send me vegetarian meals that you and your friends would eat, that would be great. I also want to say that we offer a full salad bar and this week we also had a burrito bowl that had black beans that we made. I want you to understand that every meal we make requires consideration of the labor resources. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and I will take it into account all of your suggestions for the vegetarian offerings. Our goal is to provide nutritious, balanced meals that appeal to all students, and I agree that focusing on more whole, plant-based ingredients can be a great step forward.
Thank you again for your input. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to foodservices@fccps.org if you have more suggestions or questions—we are always open to hearing from our school community as we work to improve our foodservice program.
