Fort Bragg Unified School District respects students’ rights to express themselves in the way they dress. Students are expected to wear clothing that is suitable for the school activities in which they participate. Students shall not wear clothing that presents a health or safety hazard, does not contribute to a hostile or intimidating atmosphere for any student, or causes a substantial disruption to the educational program. This dress code applies during the school day, on buses, and all school activities unless otherwise explicitly stated such as sporting events or school performances involving costumes, etc.
Students must wear:
Bottoms
Tops
Shoes
Clothing that covers genitals, buttocks, and nipples with opaque material
Any attire required by a course, such as Science, PE, or CTE, for safety purposes
Students may wear:
Hats, including religious headwear
Hoodie sweatshirts
Fitted pants, including leggings, yoga pants, or skinny jeans
Sweatpants, shorts, skirts, dresses, pants
Midriff baring shirts
Ripped jeans as long as the undergarments are not showing
Tank tops, including spaghetti straps, halter tops, or “tube” strapless tops
Athletic attire
Sun-protective clothing, including but not limited to hats, for outdoor use during the school day
Clothing with commercial or athletic logos provided they do not violate the guidelines in the “Cannot Wear”
Students cannot wear clothing with:
Violent language or images
Images or language depicting drugs or alcohol (or any illegal item or activity) or the use of same
Hate speech, profanity, or pornography
Visible underwear or bathing suits of similar design-visible waistbands or straps on undergarments worn under other clothing are not a violation
Clothing, jewelry, emblems, badges, accessories, or other items that are evidence of membership, affiliation, or promotion of any gang or gang activity.
Correctives and Consequences:
The student will be counseled in private, not in front of others, and the student will not be made to feel ashamed for their choice of dress.
The student will be asked to put on their own alternate clothing to meet dress code requirements.
Replacement clothing may be borrowed from the office.
A parent may be called to bring a change of clothes.
Board Policy 5132: The principal, staff, and parents/guardians at a school may establish a reasonable dress code that prohibits students from wearing gang-related apparel when there is evidence of a gang presence that disrupts or threatens to disrupt the school’s activities…Because gang-related symbols are constantly changing, definitions of gang-related apparel shall be reviewed by administrations and updated whenever related information is received.
Education Code 35294.1: “Gang-related apparel” shall be defined as apparel that reasonably could be determined to threaten the health and safety of the school environment if it were worn or displayed on a school campus
CELL PHONES / CD PLAYERS / iPODs / MP3 PLAYERS / OTHER ELECTRONICS
Cell phones, CD players, iPods, MP3 players, and other electronic devices (including other music and gaming devices) may only be used during break, lunch and during passing periods. These devices will be confiscated if used during any other times.
Instructional time is precious, and we, at Fort Bragg High School work diligently to maximize every minute in the classroom. Electronic devices have caused such a disruption during class time that we have significantly revised our policy on their use during school time. Once the bell rings to start school, cell phones, CD players, iPods, MP3 players, and other electronic devices may be used only at break, at lunch and during passing periods. All electronic devices are to be turned off and not to be taken out or used in any way during class time or passing time between classes. All electronic devices used outside the prescribed times will be confiscated.
All confiscated electronic devices will be returned to parents only. If parents are unable to retrieve their student’s device, they may call the front office and send an adult designee on their behalf.
Any violation of use of electronics on campus will result in the following consequences:
• 1st offense = warning
• 2nd offense = detention
• 3rd offense = Saturday School
• 4th offense = suspension
